What is heart disease?

A coronary artery is a blood vessel that carries blood to the heart muscle. Arteries are like narrow tubes. A fatty substance called “plaque” can build up in the arteries, blocking or reducing the flow of blood and oxygen. It can happen in any artery, but when it happens in the coronary arteries, the heart muscles don’t get the blood and oxygen they need to function optimally. What causes coronary heart disease?

Just like men, women can suffer from coronary disease more frequently. It can be hereditary, i.e. passed on in family members. Perhaps, it is possible to develop with age and plaque accumulates in the arteries over the years. If you are overweight, you may also develop coronary disease, or if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. High cholesterol levels can also cause this condition. Cholesterol is a critical substance that the body makes and uses to protect nerves, build cellular tissue, and produce certain hormones. Also, it’s in the meat and dairy products you eat. There are several types of cholesterol: these include low-density lipoproteins (abbreviated as LDL) and HD lipoproteins (abbreviated as HDL).

Cholesterol LDL is known as “bad” cholesterol because it can build up inside the arteries, causing plaque to further narrow them. Cholesterol HDL is known as “good” because it protects the arteries from plaque deposits.

Many foods, even if they do not contain cholesterol, contain fats that can lower or raise LDL or HDL cholesterol. Every patient should talk to their doctor about how their diet affects their cholesterol levels.
