How to Grow a Secret Vegetable Garden

When most people think of a vegetable garden, they think of carrots, cabbage, and potatoes, growing in rows of raised ground, usually hidden in the back of the garden. It is useful, but it is not usually the most beautiful part of the garden. Some people, especially those with smaller gardens, choose not to grow vegetables because they prefer the sight of colorful plants and flowers rather than the functional array of vegetable patches.

But if you choose your vegetables, herbs and fruits carefully, and distribute them throughout the rest of your garden, you can have the best of both worlds – something that’s beautiful to look at and something you can eat. Do!

The edge of the vegetable garden

Many small vegetables and herbs can be used as attractive border plants. The small globes of baby lettuces, either red or green, are planted evenly across a garden bed, looking just like tiny plants. Keep your edges throughout the season by picking a few leaves from several lettuces, rather than plucking the entire plant. Chives make another beautiful border plant, with dark green leaves and beautiful purple flowers. Parsley is a large plant, but its vivid green makes a beautiful border.

Vegetables between flowers

Some small vegetables can also be interspersed with flowers and other plants as part of a planting plan. Try using them in shapes – create a spiral of herbs between your flowers, or use triangular shapes, alternating flowers and leafy vegetables or herbs. Large selections end with their attractive curly leaves, Swiss chard with long red or yellow undersides of leaves or basil, which grow into a compact, small bush if you pick off the first shoots. The large yellow flowers of zucchini look at home in any flower garden.

Tall herbs, such as dill and dill, which have both delicate leaves and flowers as they mature, look good at the back of a flower bed, as do the leafy stems of carrot tops. Rhubarb’s dramatic large, dark green leaves can create a dramatic backdrop for tall flowers.

Runner beans are strong climbers with bright orange or white flowers – they look great on a trellis behind your flower bed. Or you can plant some tomato plants behind your flowers – red baby tomatoes look good, or try cup tomatoes for a change. If you’re worried about the plants falling over, plant a climbing bean on the other side of the stake. It will wrap itself around the tomato and help support it.

Vegetable ground cover

Many plants that grow on trees can also grow horizontally – making them an ideal form of edible ground cover. Look for cucumbers, squash, or fruits, such as strawberries — that give you beautiful flowers before delicious fruit. Herbs also work well, especially oregano or thyme.

If you’re worried about the tomatoes falling over, plant a climbing bean on the other side of the stake. It will wrap itself around the tomato and help support it.

Vegetable trills

Grapes are also ideal for use on a trellis. Plant them in a small pot to create a canopy over the sun-sensitive plants below. It also helps protect them from snails and dust-borne diseases.

piles of vegetables

It’s an herb rather than a vegetable, but if you want a hedge you can eat, then try rosemary. It grows to about half a meter (or there are different varieties that are bigger or smaller) and has purple flowers in summer.
