The Benefits Of CORE Structural Integration For Yoga Practitioners

The field of yoga and structural integration is much closer than many people realize. Dr. Rolf himself practiced Hatha yoga extensively in the 1920s and 1930s. She studied with Pierre Bernard who was a yoga teacher in Nyack, NY Dr. Rolf used her yoga practice as a tool to address issues that arose as a result of her scoliosis. Many of the problems I have discussed in previous articles about the physical effects of poor alignment become exaggerated in the person practicing yoga. Flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance are important components of an effective yoga practice—so when these things are lacking, a yogi’s practice is not at its best.

Structural integration enhances yoga practice in many ways, including the development of deep, full breathing; the increased range of motion and flexibility that comes from releasing bound fascia; and an enhanced awareness of symmetry and movement that results from each body part moving in its proper place.

Conscious, controlled breathing (pranayama) is the primary focus in yoga. My work on opening the diaphragm and taking full breaths begins in the very first session and continues throughout the series of ten. This is one aspect of structural integration that is consistently beneficial to yogis, who find that greater lung capacity helps in all areas of their practice.

Another reason yoga improves performance through structural integration has to do with flexibility and range of motion. Just as breathing has been a focus of my work since the first session, manipulating the fascia prevents parts of your body from working effectively. As muscles are freed to perform their proper functions, and body areas are realigned in their proper place in relation to each other and in relation to gravity, you will find that muscles become stronger, your body feels longer and your flexibility increases. With these results comes an increased range of motion. For a yoga practitioner, this means the ability to attain postures that are critical to growth and development in one’s practice.

A third reason for this enhanced performance is related to the first two, but may be less readily apparent. The house-on-a-faulty-foundation metaphor I referred to in previous articles applies here. When your body is out of proper alignment, the rest of the body compensates for the misaligned part’s inability to function properly. In yoga, this can mean that a person is using incorrect postures by avoiding certain body parts or unintentionally using body parts incorrectly. The result of the work I do throughout the 10 series is to reattach each part to its proper place and function, and this restores the proper relationship between all the major parts of the body and restores symmetry to the structure of the body. In short, when all of the body’s organs are where they should be, they function the way they’re supposed to. In yoga, this translates into postures performed correctly and often with greater depth and ease.
