World Water Day 2013: Making It Work Through Hell and High Water!
Gil Stern aptly put it, “Man is a complex creature; he makes the deserts bloom and the lakes die.” Mr. Stern was definitely not trying to paint a heart-wrenching situation here. Especially in light of the approaching World Water Day 2013, not even an optimistic thought for me to stay long! Like many before, this too will come and go. Water activists and bloggers may be doing a lot right now. To make us all aware of the disaster that lurks beneath the calm exterior, namely water pollution or concerns about water management around the world. And what they have to deal with instead is nothing less than sheer disrespect from us. I wonder if these activists and bloggers complain of a ‘World Water Day hangover’. Does it address the way we are trying to deal with the water management disaster or the sting of our disinterest in eco-friendly products? Are they afraid of our actions because we ignore them? Because sometimes it seems that problems are almost insurmountable. But somehow, they fully recover and bounce back to get back on track.
To be clear, I’m trying to write something persuasive, provocative and shocking here, something that will stick with you. But in the present situation it will not serve the purpose. To quote a post on last year’s World Water Day, “Awareness is good, but meaningful action at the global level is more difficult. Because year after year, the situation remains depressingly the same… or worse.” Much of that should be attributed to World Water Day. Share not received. It is not famous like New Year’s Day or emotional like Mother’s Day or commercial like Valentine’s Day. So how about we start with the basics.
World Water Day: Agenda 21
March 22 is declared as World Water Day, also known as World Water Day. Agenda 21 is a worldwide action plan where human activities can affect the environment. It was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 1992. Agenda 21 recommended various measures, including the creation of a World Water Day. The UN General Assembly passed a resolution on December 22, 1992 and declared March 22 every year as World Water Day.
The first World Water Day was celebrated in 1993. Countries were encouraged to develop initiatives to address local water needs. The purpose of World Water Day is to promote clean and safe water management initiatives around the world and to gain support for the United Nations recommendations on the problem of water pollution and to implement sound water management practices. Each year, a UN agency is chosen to lead the promotion and coordination of water pollution address and water management initiatives on World Water Day.
International Year of Water Cooperation
In December 2010, following a proposal initiated by Tajikistan and submitted by a group of countries, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2013 the United Nations Year of International Water Cooperation. UNESCO’s Year of Leadership is due to the organization’s unique multidisciplinary approach that blends natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication. Given the inherent nature of water as a transversal and universal element, the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation will naturally be adopted worldwide and its various aspects such as water pollution, water management processes, etc.

If all this is too much for you…
… Just start at home!
Install a low-flow showerhead: An eco-friendly product, this will save water and money, and you’ll still have adequate water pressure. All this, while reducing bath water usage by 50-70 percent.
Turn off the tap while you brush: Stop before your lifeline goes down the drain. According to the EPA’s WaterSense initiative, the average bathroom faucet flows at a rate of two gallons per minute. Turning off the water while brushing will save 8 gallons of water per person per day.
Water your yard in the morning: This will reduce water wastage and also promote healthy plants. Cooler air in the morning prevents more evaporation than in the middle of the day.
Use eco-friendly products: Try switching to these. Do your bit for Mother Earth.
Use a pro car wash: Professional car washes use water more efficiently, typically using 45 gallons of water per car. So, home washers use somewhere between 80 and 140 gallons.
Fix the leak: A faulty faucet wastes 3 gallons of water per day, reports the US Geological Survey. So don’t ignore a dripping faucet or leaking pipe joint. Every drop counts.
Check Your Water Footprint: Our personal water footprint measures the water we use for our daily activities. It also includes the water that goes into making the things we use every day, like washing our dirty jeans or even the food we eat. By the way, did you know that a typical pair of blue jeans uses over 3000 liters of water??
After all, the water-cycle and the life-cycle are one and the same.
