Go Kart Engine Repair – Ignition System Diagnostics Part II

Ignition system trouble shooting.

Last time we discussed how magnetic fields induce current in wires. The current flow is then used to operate the spark plug.

Now we will discuss how to shoot this system.

First of all, the system includes:

– Flywheel with magnet

-Magneto with main coil and switching coil

– An on/off wire

-A spark plug and spark plug wire.

That’s all.

In the old days you had switching circuits called points, but I won’t bother you with that. I have several old motors with points. (If you’re really interested in points I’ll write an article about solving those problems… but not today.)

So what’s the problem?

The problem is that I was driving my go kart… the chain blew… made a loud clunk… the engine ran until I turned it off. I replaced the chain and now it won’t start.

what do i do cry? uh… no…

First of all, pay attention to the system. That should be a sign that the engine is not running

– No gas

– Flooded (too much gas)

– No compression

– No spark

– The switch is off!

So yes, I checked.. there is gas. (check!)

Engine has good resistance and compression (no blown rods, no loose valves, everything is tight…) (check)

Yes I checked it was on! Also I removed the off wire from the switch near the engine. Nothing yet. (check)

Removed the spark plug and tested for spark:

No spark:

Possible reasons for no spark are:

Faulty spark plugs (ie short circuiting due to ash contaminants, broken insulators, too much gas at the plug)

or faulty ignition system

Well I cleaned the plug properly. Used a different plug…

Note: But you know what I should have done first? I took the plug wire and should try it against the engine. Well I tried that too: no spark.

Not looking good here… what to do next?

This is where things start to fall apart.

Understand that the system includes the flywheel, so we need to access it and see if the flywheel is OK.

By “okay” I mean the following:

-Does it have a magnet now?

– Is it damaged? (highly unlikely) Check the screwdriver: does it stick? (check, yes there is a magnet)

The next critical thing is to check the keyway. 8 out of 10 times the key is sheared. This can be caused by a sudden engine stop. A sudden stop can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as a broken chain catching on the active clutch. An instantaneous shock load can be introduced into the system.

If the rod flies in or the engine runs out of oil (seize) the engine can suddenly jam.
