Do-It-Yourself Infrared Sauna

Buying an infrared sauna cabin can be quite expensive, especially if you are not sure that you will benefit from it. Infrared sauna blankets, bags, or domes force you to lie in one spot for half an hour, and they aren’t cheap either. However, another option exists – that is to make an infrared sauna yourself.

In this article I would like to tell you two ways to build a sauna with your own hands, without a prefabricated kit. This can be a relatively inexpensive solution, allowing you to enjoy a sauna in the comfort of your own home at a reasonable cost. Before buying an infrared sauna cabin, you can build it to prove that infrared will provide some health benefits, or a home sauna can be a convenient option when you don’t have much space in your home.

Before I go into the explanation I want to warn you about safety. Building a sauna yourself may involve doing some electrical wiring. Infrared heaters used in saunas typically have high power requirements – as much as 1000 watts. Please, do not attempt to build a sauna yourself if you do not know what you are doing. Better to ask or hire someone with electrical experience for you. If you are setting up a sauna in a bathroom, remember that as a wet place there are strict requirements for the safety of electrical wiring.

Infrared sauna with two infrared heaters

These two heaters should be placed on either side of the room (5-6 feet apart). In the pre-heating stage, Jim recommends turning the heater toward a door or wall to warm up more quickly. Do not place the heater too close to walls or other objects due to risk of burns. Heating time is usually longer than an infrared sauna cabin and can range from 30 minutes to an hour. When the room heats up, you can use it as a normal infrared sauna, just get in there and sweat. You may want to put a towel under the door and not use the ventilation as it will allow colder air to flow into the room. You don’t need to use the bathroom for a sauna; You can use any suitable space or make a special enclosure.

In addition to the two heaters Jim uses a 250 watt infrared lamp hanging from the ceiling of the room (in his description he suggests attaching to the shower curtain rod. Infrared sauna with infrared lamps

Another way to create an infrared sauna at home is Dr. Presented by Lawrence Wilson. On his page about sauna therapy he describes how to use three 250 watt infrared light bulbs to create an infrared sauna. You will need three 250 watt infrared bulbs (the heat is not clear, because they write that they have the wrong spectrum). He recommends using Philips, General Electric or Sly lamps. You’ll also need three ceramic or plastic lamp sockets for the bulb, fifteen feet of heavy lamp cord, a medium-duty male wall plug, and a switch or timer-switch capable of handling seven amps of current.

The socket should be mounted on a 46” high by 15′ wide (or 12” high by 24′ wide) board made of wood, plywood or veneer. They should form a triangle with a middle socket on top of it. The upper socket should be at chest level while sitting. Sockets should be wired in parallel. Connect the socket wire to the switch. After attaching the sockets to the board with screws, we need to make a cover form hardware cloth so that nothing touches the bulb.

Be very careful when using this sauna, always secure the board to the wall to ensure it does not fall. Do not let children play or use it without your supervision.

Dr. Wilson also describes how to build an enclosure for your sauna with a set of pipes. They form a frame that is covered with a blanket or other fabric to create a small room that can be used for sauna sessions.

A comparison of two methods

The first method described by Jim Clements, Dr. By Lawrence Wilson, the second method is much easier to implement. And best of all it uses prefabricated equipment so no extra wiring is required so there is less risk of damage or malfunction. The heaters are covered so they cannot touch the design and all wiring is done at the factory. The downside is that infrared heaters cost more than infrared heat lamps.

On the other hand, Dr. Wilson’s sauna, if well and accurately made, is no worse than the first, but costs considerably less. One must know how to do electrical wiring to build it or have someone do it for them. The safety of these saunas depends on the skill of the person building them and can be dangerous if done improperly.
