Submersible Pump Vs Jet Pump – 3 Tips That Will Convince You To Make The Change!

Pump Basics 101-

Both submersible pumps and jet pumps are used to pump water from wells. A jet pump, either shallow or deep well, is used above ground. It uses an impeller and a diffuser to vacuum the water into the pipe. If it is a shallow pump, its ejector is above ground, while a deep well ejector is submerged. A submersible pump is submerged in the water at the bottom of your well. It uses the existing pressure to get the water to the surface and into your home. Depending on your well yield and your water consumption needs (domestic or industrial etc.) you may need to decide between a jet pump or a submersible pump.

My first tip involves saving time. A submersible pump saves you time because it is self-primed. The jet pump must be primed whether it is shallow or deep well (variable). This can be tricky because you have to get the water into the jet pump without any air. This may take several tries! A jet pump can also stop working because it has lost its prime. Then you have to get donor water from another source (like a really good neighbor) and replace the valves that are responsible for frequent prime losses. This pump will not prime if the nozzle is obstructed, or there is a leak on the suction side of the package or pump. Note that for a submersible pump, the water is conveniently located on the pump itself. Once you put it in, it starts working immediately. Saves you installation and prep time by effortlessly pushing water to the surface and maintaining pressure!

My second tip involves energy savings. A submersible pump saves energy because it delivers pressure 30% faster than a jet pump. A submersible pump is also saving energy by not having to fight gravity and atmospheric pressure like a jet pump (and it’s not as quiet). This fight can create a high elevation between the pump and the water surface. This situation can lead to cavitation causing serious damage to our jet pump. This can lead to overheating and surges that are both dangerous and expensive. Remember jet pumps are limited to 1 1/2 hp for a given hp and flow rate of about 10 gpm at a depth of 50 feet. Regardless of the size of the well, submersible pumps can supply water as per your demand. This means more water for high demand applications such as garden ponds, sprinkler systems, horticulture, industrial and commercial pumping, just to name a few.

My third tip involves saving money. A submersible pump has a sealed motor and pump. It is practically maintenance free. A jet pump does not have a sealed motor or pump, so the fluid can cause corrosion inside the pump. Leakage can also occur along the rotating shaft. Impeller wear can also be affected by suspended solids. Repairing these problems can be very expensive. Not to mention the cost of electricity that runs it. A submersible pump will have a higher initial cost (gpm/hp factor) as you might expect, but the lifespan is longer than any other pump. One reason may be that the cool water of the well that it is immersed in protects the motor and its components from high temperatures. The submersible also has a water inlet induction port at the lower end of the motor that cools it. In the long run, a submersible pump is an investment that will save you money.
