The solution to this particular example is to eliminate the implied redundant either-or condition. Moving from ‘we can improve the quality of incoming content or we can meet market demand’ to ‘we must improve the quality of incoming content and meet market demand’ creates a clear set of rules that make players winnable. the game

One of the biggest frustrations for any project team is finding themselves having to deliver projects in an unrealistic timeframe. This often happens when management responding to intense competition sets a due date before the project team creates a schedule. Wanting the best for the business and unable to negotiate a realistic timeframe, the team then creates a project schedule that requires two miracles to deliver. The situation is unpredictable and the organization ends up with an unwinnable game. My research on how successful companies deliver projects on time and on budget shows that the best-in-class companies include and extra step in the process. They treat the project estimate as a review estimate. The review is conducted by experienced persons and looks at past performance on similar projects and results are a realistic estimate. What results when the forecast does not fit the market is not an on-time completion mandate but a meaningful discussion of what project deliverables or resources can be traded off to make the desired delivery date realistic. Games that players can win.

A final way in which the corporate world often finds itself playing an unwinnable game is by not creating an environment that sustains victory. One particular area in which this occurs is business systems. An automated process for approval that is cumbersome and difficult to use, has a limited number of access points, or suffers from frequent down time does not provide an environment where a game intended to be fast and agile can be successfully played. Other environmental factors that prevent play include the support individuals receive from their immediate management and other members of their work group, the availability of adequate facilities and capital equipment, and the reward and recognition systems in place. The solution to this problem is to carefully evaluate and analyze all the environmental factors necessary to create and sustain a winning game and ensure that they are available to players.
