History of the Computer – Cooling, Part 1 of 2

We have mentioned provisions to provide a back-up power system which includes generators and batteries (see History of Computers – Redundancy). As you can probably tell we are talking about a lot of power here.

Power is heat, and in the exact world of computers, overheating can cause all kinds of problems. Manufacturers had very close tolerances for operating temperature and humidity.

In the early days of the vacuum tube, electronic circuits were more tolerant of heat, as most components could be designed to operate at higher temperatures. For example, a resistor designed for a quarter watt dissipation in a circuit today can be replaced in a tube design with a 10 watt resistor of the same value and produce the same effect in the circuit. Of course a 10 watt resistor is physically very large, but space was not as critical as in today’s circuits.

However, the problems of heat generation in vacuum tube computers were quite obvious. A vacuum tube works by heating the cathode so that it emits electrons. The cathode has a negative charge, while the anode has a positive charge.

Because of the voltage difference, of a few hundreds of volts, the electrons are attracted to the anode and can flow freely in the vacuum. This current is controlled by one or more grids placed between the cathode and anode. The grid has a slight negative bias compared to the cathode and can be modulated or changed to control the electron flow and thus the current.

For example, in an amplifier, a triode (a tube with three electrodes, anode, cathode and grid) can be made by applying a different signal to the grid, perhaps from a vinyl disc. Small variations in its amplitude or magnitude are amplified in the current flowing through the tube, usually measured across a resistor in the anode circuit.

But we digress! Back to the computer. In computers that used vacuum tubes, they were often used as on or off, 0 or 1, corresponding to the binary system. This was easily achieved by applying a negative voltage to the cathode to turn off the tube or a more positive voltage to turn it on. This arrangement works well in circuits like flip-flops and their derivatives.

But – there’s always a but – because of the large number of circuits required, each tube generating heat to operate, the cooling problems were huge. Large blowers and cooling fans around the tube, as well as in-room air conditioning, were standard. Liquid cooling was also used.

When transistors arrived in the 1960s, each circuit produced less heat. However, new solid state technologies brought new requirements for more sophisticated designs and capabilities. Multiply the number of individual circuits.

Added to that is low tolerance to temperature variations. A transistor, also commonly used as a switch, can turn on when it should be off, when overheated, causing disturbances in the system.

Transistors were not a precise device at that time. They will behave as required in tolerance and have been individually selected for this. If it is close to the tolerance limit, and there is a susceptible position in the circuit or physically in the machine, a problem may occur. Room air conditioning became very important.
