Blood, Water and Wine
As Cana, the British MP, George Galloway reminded his listeners (the show doesn’t appear to have been archived but on Sunday he was accused of being an Israeli Mossad agent), some say Jesus turned water into wine. And since the streets of this village are running with the blood of many children, analysts have turned their attention to the water instead of to the Chate Musar.
Many have asked how it is that one of the most powerful US-taxpayer-funded armies in the world has not been able to defeat a guerrilla army that has spent most of its money on social services in southern Lebanon rather than on rockets.
And why is Israel willing to face such international opposition to free two Hezbollah fighters captured in a prisoner exchange deal that has been made many times before? Israel has also alienated some friends on Capitol Hill. His cause has managed to garner bad publicity on US networks, which are generally uniform in their bias.
Israel wants a complete evacuation of southern Lebanon so that international forces can protect the area around the Litani River and ensure that the water flows to Israel. Israel has managed to steal some of the 580 million cubic meters of water each year, while the Lebanese own the dam.
“The entire basin of the Litani River lies within the borders of Lebanon. The river rises in the middle of the northern Bika valley, a short distance from Baalbek, and flows westward between the Lebanon Mountains and the mountains. It flows eastward, southward, and southwestward at its own pace. The river enters a gorge at Karun, about 30 Km flows and near Nabatia and the Fort of Beaufort, turns suddenly to the right (to the west), to the right to break the mountain range, and continues to flow through the mountainous region of Al-Amal region. North of Tyre, it empties into the Mediterranean Sea.”
(From Inventory of Conflict and Environment).
Israel receives about a third of its water supply from the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. But it needs more.
When Israel lost its twenty-year war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel asked the United States for increased contributions from American taxpayers for a large desalination plant. It appears that some of the money was rejected by the Bush administration.
According to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, Israel was using water from the Lebanese Litani River, through an 11-mile tunnel it drilled, as well as the Lebanon Wazzani Springs (source: UPI). Note that no journalists can go to confirm the information about the watering of the area, and indeed, such claims are contested (Aron Wolf, in a UN publication, states that there is no way Israel could dream of stealing from the litany).
But even as President Clinton and the Israeli government refused to negotiate on the Palestinian refugees’ right of return, Israel imported 100,000 Jews into the occupied West Bank. They use as much water as 100,000 one million Palestinians (something to do with swimming pools, according to biased analysts). As the Israeli Foreign Ministry stated:
“Israel’s Water Economy on the Brink of Crisis.”
So what should the country do? While this White House is willing to send over $10 billion worth of weapons, it won’t send money to get the salt out of the Med? A tidy buffer zone will at least ensure illegal supply from Latani.
But will China and Russia and France go along with all this? And why does the UN Secretary General not reveal the hidden agenda? And why are hundreds of Lebanese Muslim, Druze, and Christian civilians paying the price for this US-Israeli plan? Secretary Rice’s performance has been viewed as laughable by the international community. Henry Kissinger’s ‘Shuttle Diplomacy’ was like that. He “shuttled” between Syria, Egypt, Moscow, Jordan and Israel and ran circles around Egyptian and Soviet politicians. Rice thinks she’s rediscovering that American descendant strategy…by “shuttle” her laptop and Ehud Olmert’s drawing room. No wonder the Lebanese prime minister told her to go home.
