Stress Medicine – Good Medicine For Bad Stress

Most people know the difference between good stress and bad stress. Good stress helps you get up in the morning, go to work, be creative and put bread on the table. A good stress can be a challenge at times but it makes life interesting.

On the other hand, bad stress may not make you want to get up in the morning! It ruins jobs and relationships and can make you sick. It raises blood pressure, for example, and that’s just for starters. When stress starts to build up and ruin your life and health, you need help. This is all good for natural health but sometimes the help starts at the doctor’s office and goes to the pharmacy.

So what kind of help is available when medication is the only practical option for a stress crisis?

Well, long gone are the days of your family doctor whipping out “mom’s little helper” (Valium) for any rough patch. Doctors these days are scrutinized and feel pressured to justify the prescription of psychoactive drugs like Valium, a common tranquilizer. (Although the medical profession is a bit hypocritical in its eagerness to get millions of people addicted to anti-depressants and even children to powerful drugs like Ritalin, it’s probably for the best. It depends in part on which drugs are currently in favor or out.)

Despite many doctors’ reluctance to prescribe them, benzodiazepines, a large class of drugs that includes Valium, Librium, and the newer Xanax, are the most commonly prescribed medications for temporary and/or situational stress or anxiety. Although they have been around for a long time, they are the most effective medications available for generalized anxiety disorder, at least for short-term use.

In addition to general stress and anxiety relief, benzodiazepines are used to relieve symptoms of alcohol and drug abuse. If your stress problems are exacerbated by drugs or alcohol, benzodiazepines can be helpful because they can help you reduce your dependence on these substances and reduce your stress.

Many other types of medications are used to treat conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks, social phobia, and depression. This includes the notorious Prozac and its relatives. It may not be as suitable for short-term treatment of stress as benzodiazepines but should be decided by your doctor.

Another interesting class of drugs, which may be useful in certain cases, are beta-blockers. Atenolol and Inderal are well-known beta-blockers. These drugs are primarily used to treat high blood pressure but also have the ability to calm and relax anxiety and the racing heartbeat associated with these conditions. Beta-blockers do not have as strong a psychoactive effect as benzodiazepines, but they can often be useful as adjunctive therapy because severe stress is associated with high blood pressure.

The problem with most of these drugs, especially tranquilizers, is that they are only useful for short-term use. Not only do their effects wear off over time – increasing dosages are necessary to achieve the same effect – but they are also highly addictive. Generally speaking, about a month is the maximum practical duration of their effectiveness.

To be sure, treating stress with drugs is only a stop-gap solution to get out of a crisis. Going to your doctor for a prescription should also pave the way for long-term solutions to stress and anxiety. This is where natural methods come into their own. Natural methods of coping with stress are as numerous and varied as the causes of stress.

Some natural ways to reduce stress can mimic the physiological actions of the drugs just described. For example, tranquilizers actually relax muscles and reduce associated stress. In fact, Valium is referred to as a muscle-relaxant. Similarly, many natural relaxation techniques work by relaxing muscles to release tension. Relieving the physical sensation of stress can also help relieve mental and emotional discomfort.

Similarly, beta-blockers work by relaxing blood vessels, allowing them to open and improve blood flow, thereby lowering blood pressure. A natural technique called slow breathing also relaxes the muscles that constrict large blood vessels. Thus it reduces stress and lowers high blood pressure.

Medicines are viewed unfairly by some natural health advocates. But tranquilizers or sedatives can be a lifesaver in a crisis. And they can be the first step in finding lasting solutions to stress and anxiety. Their actions may point the way to effective natural methods.
