Trail Bicycling – Wildflowers Galore on the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail in Eastern Kansas

A major feature of the Kansas Prairie Spirit Rail-Trail is the abundant variety of wildflowers. Users of this trail will need to bike or walk more than once a week to see most of them because new flowers are always blooming in the warm-weather months. Others disappear just as quickly.

According to the Kansas Native Plant Society, Anderson County, which covers the middle portion of this trail, is a wilderness for wildflowers and other native plants. In short, there are so many wildflowers on this stretch of trail, their users can’t ignore them.

I spent the summer briefly studying these trail flowers on my bike with email assistance from local plant experts. I missed many of the plants there because I saw them on my stationary bike instead of walking slowly exploring them. These blooms begin early in the spring and then produce seasonal blooms that rotate throughout the summer and fall.

Typically, wildflower websites sort them by photo, color, morphology, name, and season. Here, however, I’ll just list my own 180 views in alphabetical order. Many of them will have more than one type.
