Contribution of Avvaiyar, the Grand Old Poetess to Tamil and an Alphabetical Garland to Children
It is a common belief that there were many Avaiyaras from many periods who contributed to Tamil literature. But essentially two approaches are well known.
Avvaiyar I: Belonged to the Sangam period (1st to 3rd century AD) who lived during the time of the famous kings Pari and Athikaman.
Raja Pari was an eminent philanthropist among the seven such philanthropic kings.
Athikaman was the king of Tirukavilur. The story goes that he gave the poet an amla-like nectar so that she would live forever. She contributed to the recognition of Thirukkural by the poets of Madurai’s Sangam (association of learned poets).
Avvaiyar II: The Kambars were two great Tamil poets in the 13th century who wrote the Ramayana in Tamil and Ottakuthar. Avvair was his contemporary. Her contributions in the form of sermons for children were various poems.
Tamil scholars who popularized Avvaiyar’s works include,
Mr. TK Shanmugam, (a male actor in his 40s at the time), a doyen of Tamil drama, created the story of Avvair, who acted as Avvair himself and received accolades for his efforts. After the play, he was given the title Avawai Shanmugham.
Tamil film mogul Sri SSvasan produced his magnum opus “Avavayar” in 1953 at a huge expense. Although it was a commercial film, it was rich in literal values and a money spinner.
The great Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi (Bharathiyar) was an ardent lover of Avavaiyar and followed her teachings in his poems for children.
There are many learned professors and Tamil scholars who have done extensive research on Avavai literature.
Sri Krishnan, popularly known as Vempattur Krishnan in his village, has written hundreds of books on Tamil literature. One such book is “Encyclopedia of Avvair’s Tamil” which has done extensive research on Avvair’s works and published articles by many writers in Tamil literature. Here below, a list of Avvaiyar’s various works is collated and written as ‘Avvaiyar Tamil literature’.
Her Contributions to Tamil Literature:
1 Devotional poems, mostly on Lord Ganesha, the elephant god who, when prayed to, removes all obstacles in any endeavour. Second is Vidyadana’s poem on Goddess Saraswati. The third is a poem on Lord Shiva, the ultimate authority controlling all action. Moral character is inculcated in school children through these devotional poems. So most of the schools always have these songs in the curriculum.
2 Contribution to Sangam Literature ::
i The poems in ‘Aha Nanuru’ are four hundred songs on personal and family life.
ii Poems from ‘Pura Nanuru’, meaning four hundred songs on the adventurous life of the kingdom.
iii Narrinai means guidance for good life
iv Kurunthokai means short verse.
3. Many moral teachings including
Neethi Ozukkam: Moral Justice
Nalwazi: An Ethical Way of Living
Muthurai: Father’s teachings
Ulaka Ethic: Right Living Laws on Earth
Kalvi Ozukkam: Ethics of Education.
And many moral teachings are intended for students but also apply to parents.
What is Atti Sudi and Konrai Vendhan?
Special mention can be made of ‘Aththi Soodi’ and ‘Konarai Vendhan’, masterpieces of Avvayar Tamil literature that students start learning from kindergarten and teach their children at a later age, and that teaching continues from generation to generation. Thus the teaching of Avvaiyar Tamil transcends chronological age and remains eternal.
Atthisudi means ‘eight’ flower garland and Lord Shiva is seated under ‘Konrai’ tree wearing a garland.
Several English translations are also available. Both teachings have been translated into English by Rev Dr John, Rev Bisset and author Sudgen. ‘Moothurai’ was translated by Robinson. These translations have been largely praised by Rev. Father Gupop, a hero of Tamil literature.
This author has tried to redefine Athisudi in his own words. It should be noted that this is not a translation, but a creation of your own instructions in English.
