Construction And The Environment – Effects On Water

In this context, we will consider the following types of water;

· Surface Water: This means the water visible on the surface of the earth. Examples include rivers, lakes, oceans, marshes, and others.

· Groundwater: This means water found in the ground, also known as sub-surface water. It is usually contained in rocks known as aquifers and forms a level commonly known as the water table. The water table is usually intermittent and rises or falls depending on the amount available in the feeder eg seepage.

· Precipitation: It refers to the various forms in which water appearing in the atmosphere reaches the ground. Its form is rain, dew, hail and the like.

Many common construction activities can disturb the normal patterns of said water bodies, thereby interfering with the normal nature of nature. Following are the ways in which this happens;

· Sinking wells to draw water results in lower water table. This, for example, draws water from plants, hindering their growth.

· The creation of extensive hard surfaces reduces the amount of water percolating into the soil, thereby depriving the subsurface of water and consequently lowering the water table.

· Clearing large areas of land for construction activities reduces atmospheric moisture content and reduces the currently expected rainfall.

· Construction of water bodies such as reservoirs deprives downstream of normal flow, disrupting normal aquatic patterns. This can increase the humidity in the air, resulting in more precipitation.

· Wastewater disposal at construction sites as well as built-up areas in water bodies such as rivers alters the general quality of water, thereby altering the life support system for aquatic life.

The creation of barriers such as ditches will alter the normal flow of surface runoff, thereby altering seepage rates and patterns.

· Storage of large amounts of rainwater in above or below ground tanks or reservoirs will also have similar effects.

While these are just examples, the truth is that construction has a tremendous impact on water patterns in the environment. This effect increases with increasing scope of construction work as well as ignorance of limited measures. Therefore planning to reduce the tendency to change water patterns in our environment should be the number one priority in every conceived project, as it directly affects the environment and everything that goes with it.
