Biological Grounding – Real or Hocus Pocus?
Biological grounding involves standing barefoot on the ground. The idea is that any residual static electricity will drain to earth – like draining a battery. The idea has intuitive appeal. Who hasn’t been zapped by a car door handle discharging static electricity, sometimes with an audible crack? Or, has no one taken off a shirt or blouse and heard the gurgling of a steady discharge? The question is, is there any therapeutic benefit? This article explores what published science can offer to underpin the practice of grounding in the context of health and wellness.
A university library search on the term grounding yielded 183,000 peer-reviewed publications. The word ‘grounding’ can range from the destructive grounding of a mischievous teenager to grounding a point in facts and beyond. Another search, this time on a biological grounding, narrowed the field to nearly 31,000 peer-reviewed publications. The term Biological Earthing took a manageable 600 peer-reviews to win. This article reports on several of these publications and related linked publications.
So the theory here is very simplified. Now we all know that free radicals are not a good thing. A free radical is missing an electron (and therefore positively charged). Earth supplies electrons to neutralize free radicals when connected to Earth. In 1994, Anisimov conducted experiments to show that there is an electric charge on the Earth’s surface.
Now, according to Rosalind Tan (2014) our body is an electrical conductor. Charged ions and free electrons flow well through blood and other body fluids. Electrical charge builds up in people like batteries, especially in dry weather. Fuel truck drivers must avoid any potential sparking, sometimes with a wrist strap. The relevance here is that earthing or grounding a person is part of solid science.
Dr. The first and seminal work was by White GS (1929). Before his time he helped sleep deprived persons by earthing their beds with copper wire.
In 2010 Clinton Ober et al claimed in their book: “Earthing – the most important health discovery ever?” The following

- Reduces stress and calms the body by cooling the nervous system and stress hormones.

- Reduces hormonal and menstrual symptoms.
- Dramatically speeds healing and helps prevent bedsores.
- Protects the body from potentially harmful environmental electromagnetic fields.
- Accelerates recovery from intense athletic activity.”
In 2004 Ghali and Tepliz measured cortical (stress hormone) secretion during sleep in 12 subjects. The electric fields of the subjects were measured and found to decrease from 3.270 V to 0.007 V on an average of 12 subjects with earthing. They concluded that earthing a person at bedtime reduces cortisol levels during the night thus improving sleep.
IB Anderson noted in 1965 how a person can become electrically charged in relation to his surroundings just by walking on a nylon carpet. He added that an electric field can electrically induce a person, if:
“A person has a certain ability to relate to the environment.
If one is at earth potential the surroundings are free charged.
Both 1 and 2.”
Christian Back (1967) an electrical engineer, dedicated his book “Ion for Breathing” to atmospheric electricity. The term ‘ion’ has been misinterpreted as a rock can range in size from just a grain of sand to the size of a large asteroid. The isoline regions bounded by the upper bound concentration in the vertical plane completely obscure the subjects immersed in the higher ranges of SNAI.
Of further interest are the electrostatic potentials measured by them in the vertical plane from 104.9 V and 2.2 V to 7.7 kV. Maximum values were around the footrest where the operator was brushing shoes. Russian and Swedish guidelines keep less than 500 V at a distance of 50 cm from the computer.
High school science teaches about anions and cations. The air we breathe also contains ions, and it should come as no surprise that Chary (1984) concluded that small air ions are likely to have biological effects. Yet in 1976 Kruger had already presented experimental data that small air ions were indeed biologically active.
Just as fish swim in an ocean of sodium and chloride ions, humans are in an environment of positive and negative ions. While ions can be produced, more than one-third of positive ions occur naturally as a result of radioactive decay. They do not travel far and have a short lifespan. To conclude, a snippet from an invited editorial prepared by the late Dr AP Kruger in 1982 from the International Journal of Biometeorology is presented. The editorial sets many urban myths about direct air ion. He concludes the editorial with advice for potential buyers of air ion generators:
“Air ions, negative and positive, are common components of our biosphere and are biologically active.
The effects of air ions on bacteria, protozoa, plants, insects and small animals are well known. Less is known about their action on humans. There is evidence that air ions can influence mood, behavior and performance of certain tasks.
There is some suggestion that air ions may be of value in the treatment of certain diseases, but more serious trials are needed before air ion therapy can be established as an acceptable addition to the medical arsenal.
Some air ion generators produce ozone and should be avoided.
No one has yet found that negative air ion concentrations produced by any properly constructed commercial generator can be harmful.”
