Notes From the Jungle – The Rainy Season

It’s raining nonstop in this small Caribbean town. Heavy rain for three consecutive days; The first day after my arrival night was an exception. Unfortunately I spent that lovely first day working on my website at the local jungle internet cafe, wrongly assuming there would be plenty of beach time. Apart from the rain, my visit here has been marred by a sudden and intense rebellion in my stomach against the local cuisine.

It’s my last day in Puerto Viejo and I feel incredibly depressed. Rain brings a certain element of calm to this town that is perfect for my creative flow. However, as my departure for San Jose is fast approaching, I want to enjoy the beautiful beach I remember from my last visit. There is a narrow jungle path that leads to a large expanse of unspoiled coastline. I set out yesterday afternoon eager to relax on the warm sand and swim in the calm waters, but dark skies and distant thunder sent me back to the shelter of the quiet Casa Verde Hotel. The rain hampered my ability to enjoy the new addition to the beautiful Casa Verde, a beautiful swimming pool that resembles a natural lake, interesting rock formations and a soothing waterfall that gently spills into calm blue water.

I’m sitting at my favorite hangout, Café Rico, an open-air bamboo hut hidden in a thicket of beautiful tropical foliage. This place feels like a remote forest. The sounds of local children and the scent of sweet flowers waft through the perfumed air as locals and tourists stroll along the muddy dirt road beyond the cafe. My new friend Liza, whose boyfriend Roger owns the cafe, serves me unlimited helpings of the best cappuccino in town and shares with me her latest impressions of colloidal silver and the eccentric American who lives here to promote the health benefits of colloidal silver. Basic Threats of Government Sponsored Terrorism.

A Canadian surfer walks in and orders a sandwich and a fruit smoothie. A local bush doctor named Gregory offers to make me a cup of medicinal tea made from native plants to cleanse my ailing colon. Puerto Viejo seems to have a constant stream of random characters going on, and I never know what new surprise I’ll find around the next corner. Will it be a Canadian surfer, a group of European backpackers, a retired Australian journalist or a local bush doctor? I’ve been spending time with a dance choreographer in Astoria, Queens for the past few days. We have decided that we are souls struggling with parallel life issues and seeking the enlightenment of our souls through solitary journeys.

The rain has just intensified and is pounding the bamboo roof of this makeshift cafe, drowning out all other sounds of the surrounding village. I’m nestled safely inside a tropical hideaway with delicious coffee and a steady supply of wandering drifters with a story to share. It is a writer’s haven, and yet, eludes me of the inner peace and spiritual satisfaction I seek.

My mind is preoccupied with external details. I’m reflecting on the stark contrast between my current experience in Puerto Viejo and my memories of an exciting, sun-drenched week nine years ago when I was a young graduate student in Manhattan traveling the country in search of new adventures. During those restless years of youth, I was a hopeless romantic with idealistic views about life and love. I was carefree and naive, always looking for validation in people and places and failing to find my sense of peace and fulfillment.

Over time and through many harsh storms in my life, I have come to realize that true happiness cannot be found in the physical world as it must originate from the heart and soul. Nevertheless, I struggle with many of the emotional dynamics that challenged me during my last visit nine years ago. Perhaps the solo travel experience brings these issues into sharper focus because of the time involved in deep introspection.

Funny how time works. The past nine years have seen many changes—losses and victories, blessings and heartbreaks. Although time has passed, I am sitting here watching the rain fall and thinking how much I have changed. I could swear it was only yesterday that I stumbled into this cafe smiling and seeking refuge from the tropical storm that chased me down the beach. Tomorrow I have to leave this town for San Jose, where I will spend the night before continuing my journey on the Pacific side of the country. I wonder if I will return to Puerto Viejo in another nine years and reflect on this period of my life with an equally bittersweet sense of nostalgia.

Time moves so fast and at the same time it seems to stand still. The aging process cannot be denied, and yet time is a man-made construct—a dimension created by the human mind designed to calm the ego and impose order on chaos. We value time a lot. Perhaps we would be better served by focusing on the empty space between the hours and minutes—the universal sense of timelessness where inner peace and tranquility reside.

Despite the aging of my physical body, I am the same soul I was nine years ago. If the soul moves on after the dissolution of the physical body, then we are all naturally capable of entering the space of universal consciousness where the gift of timelessness awaits us. That gift is the present moment, and we are all free to enter it when we are ready. This is my goal for this journey and my journey will continue even after I leave this village.

A brief description of two hotels on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast:

Almonds and Corals Resort – Manzanillo. Luxury bungalow tents in the heart of the Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, about 10 miles south of Puerto Viejo, offer five-star service, accommodations and amenities. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with an IF (insect factor) grade of A-. I didn’t see a single critter in my own room, the people in the bungalow next door to me reported several large insects in the bathroom area. The bungalows are raised on platforms on stilts and connected by narrow wooden boardwalks lit by gas lamps. Rooms include comfortable queen size beds surrounded by mosquito nets and open air showers. This beautiful, tranquil resort sits on a beautiful beach in the middle of a rainforest jungle. The beach is not suitable for swimming due to strong currents but is suitable for relaxing.

The nearest swimming beach is a ten-minute scenic walk from the resort. The resort is constantly shaded from the sun by the surrounding rainforest, giving the place a real jungle feel, like a five-star sleep away camp for adults or the setting of the 1960s television show Gilligan’s Island. In the spacious open air restaurant, a warm and friendly Jessie will welcome you with a beautiful smile, eager to make your stay pleasant. A full buffet style breakfast is included. Dinner is tasty and satisfying and the portions are more than generous. Delicious Costa Rican coffee and an unlimited supply of bananas are available to guests throughout the day. The resort has its own zip line, a full service spa and many cozy nooks and crannies perfect for reading, napping or relaxing and meditating. It is the perfect place to relax, unwind and commune with nature. However, if you are looking for a resort with cell phone service, Wi-Fi connection or within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and nightlife, this is not the place for you as the nearest town (Puerto Viejo) is a 15 minute drive away. .

Cabinas Casa Verde- Puerto Viejo. Located in the heart of Puerto Viejo, Casa Verde offers a clean, friendly, safe environment away from the dust and noise of the village center and yet within easy walking distance of the beaches, cafes and restaurants that dot the village. The place has a strong hippie vibe and caters to backpackers and budget travelers looking for quality accommodation at reasonable prices. Walking the grounds of the hotel, it’s easy to forget you’re in Puerto Viejo. The IF at Cabinas Casa Verde is a solid A+, as I didn’t find a single critter in my primary room with a private bath and two double beds. With beautifully manicured gardens, a lagoon-style swimming pool, soothing waterfalls, an open-air Jacuzzi and a spa area, this little piece of paradise easily found elsewhere in the Caribbean yet retains the wild and natural charm of Costa Rica. Casa Verde serves breakfast in a beautiful outdoor garden surrounded by exotic birds and beautiful tropical flowers.

Guests can help themselves to an unlimited supply of coffee, and the kitchen offers delicious breakfast options like homemade crepes filled with tropical fruits and blended fresh fruit smoothies. Owner Rene and his wife Caroline live in the area, and Rene is a constant friendly presence in the open-air lobby and grounds of his beautiful tropical oasis. It’s clear that he takes great pride in his surroundings, and treats guests like personal friends at his home. The reception desk arranges bicycle rentals for guests to enjoy the many beautiful forest trails and beaches on the outskirts of town. Bottled water, snacks, juices and sodas are available for purchase in the open air lobby. The place feels like a little piece of heaven, a small island paradise comfortably secluded from the rest of the village. If you decide to visit Cabinas Casa Verde, ask for a room with a private bath and bring plenty of mosquito repellent, rain gear and comfortable walking shoes. Be sure to ask Rene at the reception desk and get ready to enjoy the many wonderful delights of Pura Vida.
