Introduction to Paraglider Thermalling

Paragliding is the art of flying an unpowered soft wing that is held in shape by ram-air pressure. Paragliders can be launched from hills, sides or tops of mountains, by vehicle, winch or boat, or released from a slow-moving aircraft or balloon using a de-bagging launch.

As a paraglider pilot, a long-term goal is to progress to cross country flying. Cross country flights are achieved by detecting and using thermals to increase altitude and continue flight.

The term “thermal” is given to a mostly invisible tower of air rising from the Earth’s surface. Warm air tends to rise, so when a portion of air is heated, it rises above the cooler air to form a thermal column or bubble. This celestial momentum of thermal activity is captured by the paraglider and used to increase altitude. XC makes it easy to find new thermals quickly and maintain good altitude.

Thermals gather speed, strength and size as they gain altitude (until reversed). It follows that it is easier to conduct thermals near cloud-base than to find and capture one at lower altitudes. XC pilots must constantly be on the lookout for thermal sources. Thermal sources vary with the angle of the sun and the time of day.

Here’s an example of what I mean: A hill facing the sun in the late morning will be a good source of thermic activity. When the same hill is in shadow in the late afternoon, it will be a source of sinking air known as katabatic flow. The opposite side of the same hill is now the target of intense afternoon sun, with strong thermal activity popping up. This key idea is transferred to many other potential thermal sources.

Here are the top places to find strong thermals.

1. As previously described, the sunny side of a hill or mountain.

2. Rocks or dark dirt will work well in an otherwise vegetated area during the afternoon when the heat is rising.

3. Roads (and passing cars can be triggers)

4. Dark colored roofs and groups of buildings are often productive.

5. Light-colored terrain (especially surrounded by dark green vegetation) with the exception of dark-colored dry cotton fields that generate powerful thermic activity.

6. Hillsides are good sources of afternoon thermals.

7. Dense vegetation such as trees or forests provide good thermic activity during the afternoon when the ambient air cools.

8. The magic lift is a less defined lift that just happens. This may be due to the convergence of multiple sources of airflow and upward movement due to geographic constraints.

Always remember that thermals also require a source of heat and a point to release it. Some sources provide both functions while others, such as dry hay fields, require a trigger point such as a line of trees, a tractor moving across it, and so on. Depending on atmospheric conditions, thermals cause clouds to form. This makes thermal detection easier.
