How to Design a Climate Controlled Pole Building

Modern poles serve many purposes for buildings, from homes to offices, retail spaces to churches and everything in between. HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) becomes an important consideration.

This article is nowhere near an in-depth guide to climate control, but is intended to give the reader a starting point.

If starting with a concrete slab on grade, a layer of A2V (aluminum face, double layer of air cell, vinyl face) insulation should be properly installed under the slab.

Walls should be framed with bookshelf style shelves spaced 24 inches on center. Also known as commercial girts, they create an insulation cavity, allowing fiberglass insulation batts to be installed horizontally in wall girts. If steel siding is used, it may be beneficial to use a quality housewrap between the wall girt and the siding. With commercial girts, to properly size the insulation cavity, create a space equal to the depth of the stud, plus 1-1/2″ outside of the post where the girts extend. This allows the drywall to attach to the interior. The wall fits snugly, creating a smooth wall surface.

Another great option for wall insulation is BIBS – which provides a higher R value than batt insulation, as well as filling all voids.

As a sidebar, my large three-story (84′ x 60′) accessory climate controlled building has a BIBS (yes, it’s a pole building). The cost savings on our heating and air conditioning bills is a testament to this superior product.

Ceilings – Use ceiling loaded trusses with ceiling joists 24″ oc sheetrock ceiling joists can be attached to the underside of the ceiling joists and insulation blown over.

Any time a dead attic space is created – the attic space must be ventilated. As long as 1/2 of the required ventilation area is in the upper 1/2 of the attic, the attic vent area must be 1/300th of the attic footprint area. Otherwise, 1/150th is required. The best way to achieve attic airflow is to use attached vented overhangs in conjunction with a vented ridge.

As I said, this is a primer on how to ensure climate controlled pole building. Ask the designers of your new building for more help. I’m more concerned about people wanting to over-design their new pole barn, then to control the climate “down there”. While I want you to be warm (or cool) and comfortable, I also want to make sure you’re using the “Three R’s” – choosing the right product, to do the right job, at the right price.
