MTP Fiber Cable is Replacing Copper Cable in Computer Room Applications?

There are several reasons why fiber cables are replacing copper cables for many computer room applications. The most important reason is that high definition conferencing and HDTV systems require greatly increased bandwidth. It requires high speed to meet the information requirements and fiber cable offers more bandwidth than copper cable.

Another important reason for this trend is that the connectors on fiber cables (especially LC) are smaller in size compared to copper cables and require less back plane real estate on servers, switches and routers than are required for data systems. This is the reason why manufacturers are switching to LC connectors on some of their servers and switches.

Fiber cables that are immune to electromagnetic crosstalk are preferable in many cases where power lines run in close proximity to data cables. Where there are air conditioning and/or fan motors, which may be essential to computer systems, and are close to data cabling, the use of fiber cables will avoid cross talk interference with data signals.

It is also very important to consider spacing in the setup of computer room data systems. With fiber cables, we can extend the distance we can carry high speed data compared to copper cables. The LC connector is half the size of the SC connector, which helps reduce the space required.

Fiber optic cables are high-density, multi-fiber trunk cables terminated in MTP connectors that can be quickly pulled or laid from point A to point B. Fiber is pre-tested, pre-terminated and essentially plug and play. Pulling individual strands over more than one floor and polishing and terminating do not cause detectable error. To expand to new servers, a trunk cable with MTP connectivity can be dropped and up and running very quickly. Not all cabling or cassettes need to be installed up front with the required capital outlay. MTP fiber cables contain 24, 36, 48, 72, or 144 fibers. A network can be deployed as servers and switches grow.
