Eco-Friendly Kitchen Appliances – Make Your Kitchen More Earth Friendly

The DOE and EPA use the Energy Star program to promote the sale of environmentally friendly kitchen appliances. Most of us have seen the yellow stickers with the Energy Star logo, but do you know what those stickers mean? For an appliance to qualify for Energy Star, it must use between 10% and 66% less energy and/or water than other models. However, it cannot compromise the quality of the device or dismiss the added features. This is a great way to find out which appliances are the most eco-friendly and which use the least amount of energy. However, here are some additional tips to look for in equipment:

Stove and oven

Induction – A cast iron or stainless steel pot is placed above the induction coil of the stove. This excites the molecules in the vessel and generates heat. Note: The process does not work with glass containers and aluminum reduces efficiency. Induction cooking is not only more energy efficient but also faster. An induction cooker simply heats the pot directly on it. It does not heat the air or the stove surface around it. Induction cooking has an efficiency rate of 84%. Normal gas cookers are about 40%. This is one of my favorite eco-friendly kitchen appliances.

Hybrid Solar Ovens – Solar ovens reach temperatures of around 400 degrees. A total solar oven does not require any electrical power. They are completely dependent on the solar energy of the sun. The hybrid version works on the same principle, but has an electric backup when solar consumption is not available.

Fridge and Freezer

Side-by-side refrigerators use about 10% more energy than the top-and-bottom option. Avoid ice makers, as they use electricity to make ice. Also, avoid automatic defrosters and heaters. Refrigerator accounts for 15% of your total electric bill. So, if you can’t buy all your eco-friendly kitchen appliances at once, get them first. Read the yellow and black “Energy Guide Label”. It will tell you how much energy each brand and model uses.

Dishwasher

Dishwashers use one-sixth the water and soap, and hand-washing uses about half the energy. Look for dishwashers with booster heaters and on/off electric dryer features. You might think that a smaller motor would reduce energy consumption, but going with a larger motor will prevent the dishwasher from running another cycle. Smaller motors don’t have the spray power to clean heavy pots. Also, look for water efficient models. Some of these use half the water of a regular dishwasher and have auto sensors, which determine how dirty the dishes are.

Remember- eco-friendly kitchen appliances may cost more, but it won’t take long to recoup the extra cost of the appliance. In 2006, Energy Star appliances saved consumers fourteen billion dollars on utility bills. Energy guide labels are required on all appliances. So, take advantage of the information and compare several brands and models. Also, ask about federal tax credits for upgrading to Energy Star appliances.
