The Main Parts and Functions of an Air Intake System
The air that a car’s engine absorbs while running has a major impact on its performance. The positivity or negativity of the effect depends on the quality of the air supplied to the engine. Cooler air intakes provide more efficiency because the air they send to the engine is denser and the oxygen molecules are tightly bound together, resulting in improved engine performance.
There are plenty of air intake systems on the market these days, and some can actually increase the horse power of your car’s engine. Modern cars and other vehicles have air intake systems that consist of different parts, some systems are very complex and include specially developed intake manifolds that divide the air into different cylinders and thus increase power.
Basically a car intake system consists of three parts.
- Air filter
- mass flow sensor and
- throttle body
Some manufacturers also include silencers in the manufacture of the air intake system, but the efficiency of the silencer is reduced because it obstructs the flow of air. So performance oriented vehicle owners mostly ditch them. An important part of the air intake system is the sensor that detects the air temperature. Cool air is allowed to enter by opening the flap. Air enters through a long plastic tube; It then passes through the air filter and finally reaches the AFM (Air Flow Meter).
There are two types of air flow meters:
- Wayne type
- Hot wire type
A hot wire type system consists of numerous wires with constant resistance in the air passage. When cold air enters the air intake system, it hits the hot wires and cools the wires. This reduces the resistance of the wires and allows more voltage to the EFI computer to adjust the fuel and air mixture. All this happens in a split second but the effect on performance is impeccable.
The throttle chamber in the air intake system controls the flow of air into the car’s engine. In addition to this chamber, there is another bypass chamber that allows a small amount of air to pass through the throttle body. This volume of air is used to adjust the engine speed.
The last part of the air intake system is the cold start valve. The functions performed by this component are similar to those of a choke in a carburetor. This element is shaped like a valve with a special element that expands when heated. When it is not in its expanded form, i.e. when it is cold, it facilitates the passage of air into the throttle chamber.
These are the main functions of the air intake system and by installing them you can greatly increase the performance of your car. Systems like K&N air intake systems are not only affordable, but also increase engine horse power and fuel efficiency, allowing you to take your car’s performance to the next level.
