Everything About Varicose Veins Problems, Symptoms, Causes & Natural Treatment

My mother suffered from varicose veins and I know how painful it can be. She was embarrassed because she would wrap her leg in some cloth, she was troubled because she was in pain and sometimes a vein would bleed. All these veins were bluish purple in color, twisted and all congealed and finally she had to have an operation because the bleeding was not stopping and the pain was more. Varicose veins affect adults over the age of 50 and are more common in women.

Do you know what varicose veins are?

Varicose veins are enlarged, dilated, swollen tortuous veins that are filled with blood and usually appear on the legs and feet. They are also called spider veins because they form a web like pattern especially in the lower limbs, calves and ankles.

There are many reasons for the formation of varicose veins and the main reason is physical inactivity or a sedentary lifestyle. They can also be caused by fatigue, long periods of sitting at a desk, standing in one place, lifting weights, or long walks. Certain dietary habits like eating a lot of curd or drinking lassi, heavy meat, junk food, fried food, aerated drinks also cause varicose veins.

How are varicose veins formed?

The function of the heart is to pump blood through the blood vessels by filling or relaxing them and expelling or constricting them. The aorta in the heart which is connected to the blood vessels experiences a pressure of 80mmHg during filling and 120mmHg during ejection or contraction. It then flows through blood vessels into small and thin-walled capillaries where gas exchange occurs with emerging tissues. After the blood flows through the capillaries it enters the veins and after a series of these processes it finally flows to the heart. In this process blood carries oxygen to various organs, tissues and cells.

Valves located along the blood vessels control the flow of blood in the desired direction. But if these valves don’t work properly, blood doesn’t flow in the right direction and back to the heart, causing the blood vessels to swell. These veins are close to the surface of the skin surrounded by muscles that help them deliver blood. Varicose veins are more likely to develop when the valves weaken these veins.
