The most important principle in designing any heat exchanger is to keep the air and fluid in a counter-flow arrangement. This means air and water travel in opposite directions through the heat exchanger. Water, refrigerant or steam always wants to enter the side of the exchanger leaving the air. This means that while air is moving from left to right, liquid is moving from right to left. All coils are tested in a counter-flow arrangement to provide maximum efficiency. When the HVAC coil is piped backwards you can lose up to 15% efficiency. This is the primary reason why deep HVAC coils are designated right- or left-handed. Counter-flow has negligible effect on 1-2 row coils.

When you stand in front of the coil, the connections will be on the right or left side. This is what “hands” means. Most manufacturers specify the left and right facing airside of the HVAC coil inlet. Some manufacturers specify left and right when facing the airside entering the coil (the air hits you in the face) When facing the end of the coil with pipe stubs, the supply connection should always be at the bottom, leaving the air side and the coil return connection should always be at the top of the airside entry of the coil.

When you’re replacing a chilled water coil, the connections are almost always on the bottom right and top left. Once you determine the supply and return feeds, the arm designation is not important. The HVAC coil is either bottom right/top left or bottom left/top right.
