Carnivorous Plants – They Actually Do Something – Part 1

This is a series of articles designed to familiarize you with insectivorous plants and uncover the secrets of their growth. It is sponsored by John Leslie.

Carnivorous plants are a unique species. More properly known as insectivorous plants, they capture and digest insects to obtain the nutrients they need. They require additional nutrients because they thrive in low-nutrient swamps and freshwater sources.

When you think CP (carnivorous plant), you think Venus flytrap. However, VFT is only 1 of over 600 species! The Venus flytrap is probably the best known CP due to its unique trapping mechanism. In addition, since they are native to North and South Carolina, early American colonists may have been attracted to them and thus became familiar with the science.

VFT has an active trap. This means that once an insect is found, it takes energy to capture it. On the VFT’s trap, there are three-or-more transparent trigger hairs. Touching any hair twice, or touching two hairs at once, closes the trap, hopefully trapping the insect inside. As the insects struggle, the trap seals. Cells grow around the trap margin at the fastest growth rate known to science. Once sealed, the trap secretes enzymes to digest the insect. After 4-10 days (depending on the size of the insect) the trap opens again and the exoskeleton of the insect remains. The trap can catch and digest insects 3 more times after that meal, (4 times total) it can trigger a total of 10 times and live up to 3 months before dying.

As a perennial, VFT lives for more than 30 years under the right conditions; Maximum trap size is about one inch (although plants have been selectively bred for larger traps, up to 2 and a half inches). They begin their life as seeds. The seeds grow slowly, taking about 4-6 years to reach maturity and flowering. The first year, the trap size is 1/8th of an inch. In the second year, in doublets, about 1/4 inch. It stops doubling when it reaches 1/2 inch in size. After this stage, the traps become 3/4 inch and finally 1 inch.

In winter, VFTs are found in a dormant state. Leaves and traps usually die, and the bulb rests and gathers strength for the coming spring. VFTs must be kept drier in the winter than in the growing season or they will rot. In spring, VFT grows in a rosette pattern and sends up flower stalks. In summer he holds his traps erect. In the fall, it returns to a rosette and prepares for dormancy.

The Venus flytrap, or Venus flytrap, is threatened with extinction in the wild. Hunting and habitat destruction are the cause. If you want to help, you should support a conservation group.

Growing Venus flytraps is not difficult, as long as certain requirements are met. They require full sun, distilled or reverse osmosis water, and nutrient-free media such as peat moss and perlite.
