Writer’s Block – Every Speaker’s Bane – Tips For Minimizing Frustration

“Sorry for the delay in this update, I was having trouble figuring out what to say”… this might be the expected opening from someone suffering from writer’s block.

The experience of reaching a stage of preparation and being unsure of how to proceed will be familiar to most people involved in developing presentations, and how you manage this will make a significant difference to your results – resulting in either a presentation that is rambling and disjointed or one that flows smoothly and is easy to follow.

Despite the advances in modern medicine, effective treatment in most cases is time, and similarly, writer’s block can often be resolved by pausing and temporarily turning your attention to other things. The fastest point between two points may be a direct line, but pushing yourself through a block in the writing process can produce a product that isn’t as good as it could be.

Of course using time to solve a block in the writing process only works if 2 factors are present, time and commitment. If you’ve given up on preparing the day before your presentation, you may feel stressed that you don’t have time to wait for the presentation to develop in the back of your mind.

For this reason, I always recommend that you develop a broad presentation outline well in advance. The details and examples you use to illustrate your presentation can be filled in closer to the presentation date, but it’s best to develop a general structure, purpose, and objective well in advance.

Presentation also requires commitment; Leaving your presentation area lying around won’t be effective until you return to it. Sometimes ideas on how to take a presentation forward come from a variety of places – things to watch in your day, television or newspaper articles – the sources of ideas are endless and so is the ability to use them to overcome your obstacles. .

Discussing the issue with another person can also be an effective strategy for moving forward. Often the process of verbalizing a presentation will help clarify and define where you are and where you want to be.

Acting as a sounding board for someone to bounce ideas off of or clarify a situation can be invaluable, if in fact, your sounding board usually doesn’t need to say anything, just stating the problem will reveal a solution.

Another strategy that can be applied besides recalling a Cher song from the late eighties is the process of rewinding time. A speech or presentation is a journey and it may help to think of it as a journey through a series of caves in an underground cave complex. You are leading your listeners to the light however from each cave there are many tunnels leading to more caves.

Writer’s block can indicate that you’ve reached a dead end, that there’s no cave with no exit, or at least no exit that leads you to the light of day – if that’s the case, go back to the previous cave and try another tunnel, or if we stray from the metaphor. If there is to go, going back to the previous part of the presentation and considering other options may lead to a new path or paths towards the light.

If taking a step back doesn’t help provide some resolution, consider starting back at the beginning – your why, your goal. As discussed above, a block may indicate that you have strayed from the path and if you have a clear understanding of where you are trying to go, it can give you the direction you need.

Sometimes we set ourselves goals that upon reflection we realize we can’t meet, so reviewing the presentation goal as a whole can help you realize that the presentation just won’t work or flow the way you want it to.

Instead of persisting beyond this point, consider asking yourself the following question “Is this good enough?”

In terms of development or delivery, it’s very rare for me to be completely happy with any presentation. This is not a reflection of the fact that the presentations are poor, but rather a persistent feeling that they could have been better.

Importantly, when you’re stuck in preparation, you’re denying yourself the opportunity to consider whether you’re being too hard on yourself by considering every option you consider—when you’re not satisfied with the next step in the presentation flow. And using segments that aren’t up to your standards will allow you to continue and develop the rest of the speech, and then see the problematic passage throughout the presentation’s content.

At this point you may see that the part you were unhappy with is not as bad as you initially thought, or alternatively the rest of the presentation provides ideas for improving that section.

Tips for conveying true ideas

Time – Allow plenty of time to prepare so you can nail the presentation

Discuss – Support people with whom you can discuss problems because voice can lead to solutions

Turning – Turn the speech back to previous points or the purpose of the presentation

Try – Work through the weak sections and see if the presentation as a whole leads to ideas for solving the problems
