How To Quiet A Noisy Aquarium

An aquarium represents a small part of a great ocean, a raging river, or a tidal pool teeming with life. It’s like taking a cube of the underwater environment, and containing it so that we can infinitely enjoy all its intricacies, while still being able to breathe!

And understanding that the underwater environment is quiet (actually it’s very noisy, but we think it’s quiet), the last thing we want in our exhibition is a noisy aquarium. or an aquarium. I would say that we currently have 4 active aquariums in our apartment.

We are surrounded by life. Fish, plants and a big, crazy, peaches and cream tabby cat. And after twenty years of tanks, big and small and everywhere in between, I finally answered the problem that puzzled me from the beginning – “Why is my tank so noisy?!”

What causes noise?

We’ll get to the big answer in a moment. First, here’s a bullet list of things to look for that might be your noise problem.

The same sound as air: Air pebbles and air tubes all add beautiful effects to your underwater environment. They also add strength to jewelry that requires pressure to work from bubbles. Small treasure chests with hinged lids require a certain amount of air to function properly. But overload it, and all the extra bubbles that appear on the surface will create a constant, loud noise.

Present same sound: Second to air movement, we like a lot of water movement (simulated natural flow) in our tanks. Fish need it for growth and happiness. We have a guppy tank where you can paint the treadwheel on the side of the tank in grease pencil. Fish swim against the current, diving and rising in unison. They like flow. But add powerheads and increase the tank size and you’ll have noise problems.

Devices sound the same: Pumps, filters, sumps, even plumbing can all make noise. Sometimes too loud. Most pumps are designed to reduce noise. But if you beat it while custom installing your system, the vibrational warranty will soon come to mind. And not in a good way. Equally important, the surface where you keep things safe or just sitting on them can be just as easily the culprit.

The same sound as furniture: I built all my aquarium stands and structural built ins. As soon as I peeled off the top of the plywood, I heard a horrible sound. The air pump’s rubber feet transferred vibrations through the plywood skin, and the exposed area below the built-in became an echo chamber. Placing the air pump in a more prominent location on the cabinet solved the problem.

The design sounds the same: And finally, your design can also be a loud, loud offender. Air flowing over rocks, currents and eddies around fixtures and decorations, even the intake and output of your pump all go into the aquarium noise reduction formula.

what can i do

Tone it down: The calmest aquarium is a simple bowl of water. No air movement, no flow. A still water tank.

If you use more than one air pump, especially a small pump with a single outlet, choose a larger pump with multiple outlets. Rule of thumb – the pump should supply all your air needs for that one aquarium. Not only do you have a noise maker, but it’s good to reduce noise in large pumps.

And if your pump is more than a few years old, trash it. Even if it still works. Old parts, especially rubber, are probably the main source of your noise. Now the hard rubber feet do nothing to muffle noise. They can add to it.

And use a gang valve to specify the amount of air going to your accessories. That little air stone in the single line from the pump is a big noise problem. And it will look just as good with only half the air volume passing through it. Maybe even better.

Hear the effect: Most of the power accessories you buy to add to your tank have some adjustment feature. Put your ear down next to the current the powerhead is creating and listen as it quiets down as you adjust the outlet. This could be a volume issue or simply a direction issue. Maybe it vibrates against the tank or rocks. Adjust it as needed.

Adjust your gang valves on your air lines the same way. Put your ear to the surface of the water and listen as the flow adjusts. When you find the right level of quietness, see how it affects the look. Then make small adjustments to reach a happy medium of sound versus appearance.

Design with sound in mind: Setting up a quiet tank is easy, then try to achieve it. Remember the bowl of water sitting in silence? Keep that in mind as you add accessories or plan the placement of your essential equipment. Which brings us to the big problem solved after 20 years of aquariums.

Not everything works together

I love bubble wands behind my tanks. They are virtually invisible, yet emit large amounts of bubbles. I like oxygen tanks, so I like a lot of air movement. It circulates the food in the tank and helps with the current to keep the fish happy.

But due to space and budget constraints, I always rely on a saddle tank filter, not a canister type. There are only so many places you can put a saddle filter, and thus, only so many inlets can fit in the tank.

The sound of my filters has always driven me crazy. They are by far the noisiest filters of all my friends. And lately, my other tanks. That’s when I realized the problem.

My wife set up the other three tanks and is not as big a fan of bubble wands as I am. Her filters were silent, their flow every bit as powerful as mine.

My filter still felt like the impeller was coming apart. I pulled the entire system, checked all the parts, and made sure everything came back smoothly. As has always happened in the past, my filter went away.

That’s when I realized it. I pulled the airline to the bubble wands and the noise stopped. Air flow was coming out of the wand and into my filter inlet tube. The filter was trying to fill with water. This was not possible because the wands were filling it with air.

And so, the filter will sound the same as the filter when it first starts and self primes. Problem found! Now to solve it. I didn’t want to get rid of my bubble wands.

I took a drinking straw (clean and new) and cut it in half. Then I cut the pieces lengthwise to create an opening. I wrapped the straw over the bubble wand, below the filter inlet. This left a bit of an opening through which air escaped, so I slotted the first straw 180 degrees opposite the first and placed the second straw. Problem solved, air stopped in that area.

and no bubbles are obtained at the filter inlet. I also noticed a slight increase in water flow through the filter, which means better filtration.

Less might be better

In this case I find that only accessories give me the look I want in my ‘natural’ environment, some things just don’t work with others. You can modify them. But the lesson is that not all equipment in your tank is the best for the tank and your fish. And especially, your ears.
