Will Today’s Quotations Become Tomorrows Gardening Proverbs?

We’re all able to quote a gardening proverb or two, even if we don’t really understand what they mean. Most of these may have been passed down to us by family members from older generations. No one knows where most of these old sayings originated or why they were coined in the first place. But one can imagine that when it was first spoken it was meant more literally than it is today.

If you will, imagine the Chinese proverb “a thorn protects the rose, only harming those who steal the blossoms” as modern sayings, especially in youth culture, and any ideas passed down to the next generation.

Many of the so-called quotes from “celebrities” are profane and nothing short of profanity. People who hang on their every word and action, will they really want to be remembered in years to come?

Like all sayings, those related to gardening are thought-provoking and can actually fit many situations. There is an African saying “Knowledge is like a garden, if it is not planted it cannot be harvested”. What a profound thought indeed.

“Don’t make mountains out of molehills”, “You reap what you sow” and “Fresh as a daisy” are some of the garden sayings that are famous around the world. Despite television, the Internet and other forms of media, one cannot imagine words, such as Big Brother contestants, being remembered by people around the world for weeks, if not hundreds of years.

Perhaps as gardeners, we should be proud of these wonderful words of wisdom and put some of them in our gardens. What could be better than “He who plants thistles may never expect to gather roses” in your rose bed? “Friends are flowers that never fade”, in your borders, where can your visitors see them?

Yes, some of it will be emotional, but what’s wrong with that? After all, you probably take great pride in your garden and enjoy showing it off to friends and family. Why don’t you let them see that the reason you have a beautiful garden is because you have a romantic heart.

Or, maybe you have something more modern and attractive? How about something from John McEnroe – “You can’t look at those flowers and they’re f*****g plastic”.
