The Development of Letters and Words in Early Modern English

English is the second most widely spoken language on our planet today, behind Mandarin Chinese. More than 1.5 billion people speak, listen, read and write English every day. But English has developed tremendously in the last thousand years. The spelling of English words today differs little from what English speakers read or wrote between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Look for documents printed or written in English and you should see a noticeable difference in the spelling of words. The primary differences in spelling between Early Modern English and Modern English are outlined below.

In Early Modern English the letter “u” became “v”. Several examples would be: Liu, Yuer, Faure, clouer (alive, forever, friendly, clover). If a “u” started a word, it became a “v”, eg vpon, vntil, vfuall (on, until, usual).

Words with “vv” became “w”: povvder, flovver, tovver, vvither (power, flower, tower, wither).

Sometimes the letter “b” that starts a word is “v”: benomous, benerate (poisonous, venerable).

Almost all words that include an “s” in the middle were originally “f”: caftle, congrefs, mofte (castille, congress, most). “f” was the same as “s” in classical Greek. This change made English words look more distinct.

“y” became “i”: Daily, Forgiveness, Faith, Article (Daily, Forgiveness, Faith, Article).

Many of today’s words with consonants ending in the last letter “e”: Kingdom, Micah, Righteousness, Muste.

Many words today are spelled with double letters, such as: Sonne, originall, cann, batt (son, originall, can, bat).

From the seventeenth century the first letter of most nouns became capital letters. Noun capitalization is derived from the German language, in which all nouns are capitalized. This was the rule for all printed English words from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century. Several examples include: “He has a method for reading the title of any Playe, or “The Dog Saw the Flower and the Hat”.

If you’re interested enough to examine the words in context, look online and scan the pages of the King James Version of the Bible (1611), William Shakespeare’s poems and plays (1593 to 1613), even original copies of the Constitution. United States (1776). Of course, many other printed and written materials were produced, carefully preserved in world-class libraries and can be searched on the Internet. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how today’s English words were once pronounced.
