The fixture has instant hot water when you reach the faucet, saving you not only time but also water. There is no need for the water running down the drain to stand there while you wait.

Many people have fixtures so far away from the water heater that they turn on the hot water and do something else instead of waiting there. When they return, the water heats up. This means they are running hot water down the drain. Energy to heat water is much more expensive than water. It is a huge waste of energy and also contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases. Instant hot water system definitely removes this waste.

Instant hot water can even clean dishes! A major cause of dishwasher problems is that the water is often not hot enough to completely dissolve the dishwashing detergent. By insuring that your dishwasher gets hot water, you’ll have sparkling clean dishes.

There are many “instant” or “rapid” hot water pumping/distribution systems on the market, and choosing the right system for your specific application is important. Some use pumps, some rely on thermo-siphoning, and not all systems will work with all types of water heaters.

Some of these systems, manufactured by Laing, RedyTemp and others, place the pump and valve combination on the fixture farthest from the water heater. The system pumps hot water in a large loop, from the water heater to the fixture, through the pump, back to the water heater through the cold water piping. Pumps have very slow pumping rates. When the valve between the hot and cold water lines detects hot water, it closes. This keeps the water in the valve at about 95 degrees.

The problem with this type of system is that it is really a “luke-warm” system. 95 degrees is lower than human body temperature so it feels like really cold water. Since you’re not starting with cold water and the pipes are filled with warm water, it won’t take long for the hot water to reach the fixture, but it’s definitely not instant hot water!

The pumping system is constantly on and off throughout the day and therefore keeps the piping (both hot and cold) warmer than ambient temperature water. This makes the water heater work harder and use significantly more energy than a standard plumbing system. Pumps also last longer, so add that energy to the mix.

These systems will not work with tankless water heaters. A tankless water heater typically requires 1/2 gallon per minute or more to flow through the heater before it will turn on. The Laing and RedyTemp systems do not pump enough water to turn on the heater.

Another type of system places the pump on the water heater and the valve on the fixture farthest from the water heater. The pump creates a pressure difference between the hot and cold lines, and so when the valves under the sink open, water flows through the cold water lines and back into the water heater inlet. The valves are temperature controlled and close when they find 95 degree water. The Grundfos system allows for more than one valve, even one for each fixture if desired. Watts makes a similar system but you can only use one valve per fixture. These types of systems often include a clock timer with them so you can turn them off when you’re not using them. Pain can occur when the power goes out and the clock malfunctions.

Like the previous systems, these systems also keep the hot and cold water lines filled with warm water and thus waste huge amounts of energy. Unlike the previously mentioned pumps, these systems cannot be used with tankless water heaters for the same reasons.

If saving water and being energy efficient is important to you, you may want to check out a “demand” hot water system. Demand systems rapidly deliver hot water to fixtures on demand. When you want hot water, you push a button and the hot water is pumped to the fixture at high speed. When the hot water reaches the fixture, the pump shuts off, letting the hot water out through the cold water pipe. Now you have instant hot water, nothing goes down the drain, and you don’t waste any heat keeping the pipes constantly hot.

Metland makes a system called the D’Mand System with several models. They range in price from $330.00 to over $500 and have many accessories such as using a motion detector to turn on the pump. Metlund’s largest D’mand system will run most tankless water heaters.

Chilipepper Sales has a requisition system called Chilipepper Appliance. The ChiliPepper appliance has the most powerful pump on the market and will work with any tankless water heater. It will actually work with any storage type water heater. The least expensive is the Chilipepper $180.00 system. Since demand systems only run for a few seconds each time they are used, they use very little electricity. A typical system uses about $1.00 – $2.00 per year in electricity for the pump.

One of the great things about having a demand hot water system is that every time you use hot water and push the button to start the pump, you’ll feel great about not having to flush all that water down the drain.
