How To Rock Your 2021 Business Plan

The anxiety and angst of 2020 is behind us. It was a year that left its mark on thousands of businesses everywhere.

The pandemic has caused many companies to adjust, readjust, and then readjust their business strategies.

Those with strong operational foundations were able to survive. They were able to adapt to the ebb and flow of the market.

Some thrived and saw significant increases in sales and revenue. Others were not so lucky and were forced to trim production and staff.

As the Covid economy continues, business owners must continue to adjust and add to their strategic processes. This includes analysis, evaluation and developing a plan that establishes the right direction and the discipline necessary to navigate through the headwinds that 2021 will surely face.

Case in point. I was a member of the 1988 USVI Olympic Sailing Team. We left from the US Sailing Center in Coconut Grove, Florida. When we raced, the course was set up in a triangle. This means you need your boat to move fast and maintain speed no matter which way the wind is blowing.

For this course you not only have to fight hard to maintain speed but also keep an eye out for other boats. You literally cannot let an opponent “take the wind out of your sails.”

The race involved a high level of strategy. The sails had to be set precisely to make the upcoming 300 degree turn without losing speed. It was an all-out effort to cross the finish line before the competition.

Your business plan should do the same. It’s creating a strategy that not only enables your company to keep pace, but is actually designed to win the race in the new year.

An example of a winning plan is the popular Entrepreneurial Operating System® (EOS®), used by thousands of businesses across the country, and the echo here is apt. As with the EOS® plan, your strategy should focus on six key areas.

It includes…

A solid vision. One where everyone in the organization is on the same page and, if you will, rowing in the same direction. The entire team must understand the direction of the business and how you are going to get there. Better progress can be made when employees have a clear vision of where you are going and then spend much of their time aligning with it.

Great people. Business owners should surround themselves with great people from top to bottom. A great vision cannot be fulfilled without a great team. Many business owners struggle in this area but the best companies have a strong support group.

Data and metrics. Management must cut off all personality, emotion, opinion and ego. Instead, plan to a handful of objective numbers. It gives you an accurate pulse of where things are at any given time. These data points will help keep the team focused, engaged and working towards your vision.

Solving the problem. Problems can hold a company back. Most are solvable but if left unsolved can result in a well-bred slow moving mule. These problems should be addressed to their root cause. When properly addressed they can be eliminated and/or their impact significantly reduced.

process. Companies have different business processes. Some are better than others and may be different for each employee. Management needs to document what these procedures are and then facilitate them to ensure that everyone in the organization is following them.

Traction. Once companies implement this process, they reach a stage of implementation where they are making great progress, which was never imagined before. By identifying their top priorities, setting aside weekly time to work through them, and holding each other accountable, they are able to grow more and faster.

Creating the right strategic plan, with the right processes for implementation, measurement and accountability, will enable the business owner to cut their numbers and rock their business plan in 2021.
