Beckett Oil Burner Trouble – Review

Beckett oil burners are very reliable oil burners. Like anything mechanical, they will fail from time to time. Basic Check No. 1, Is power supplied to the burner? Check this with a volt meter. I have seen breakers or fuses that seem to be fine. When checked by the meter, it is found to be tripped or faulty. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been called out to repair an oil furnace, only to need a breaker turned on or a fuse replaced. This can often happen due to power surges, lightning or low voltage.

Once the power is verified you can begin to check that the controls are working properly. First, find the red button on the gray box and press it. I could tell you to reset Protectorelay, but many of you will have no idea what that is, so the red button on the gray box will do for now. Does the motor start when you do this? If not, check motor power. This is best done by removing the gray box and checking the power of the wires going to the motor. Always remember to be careful of hot wires and turn off the power before disconnecting any wires. If the motor has power, check the reset button on the motor. It’s a small red button that usually reaches the worst place on the back of the motor. If the motor hums, but does not run, try turning on the blower under the transformer. A transformer is the black box next to the gray box. If the blower is not running, remove the two screws holding the pump and remove the pump. Does the motor start now?

Here are the options from what we know so far. Does the motor run when the pump is removed? If so, the oil pump is probably bad and won’t start. Replace the pump and everything should work. If the motor still hums, replace the motor. Of course if the motor has power and the reset has not tripped then the motor is bad and needs to be replaced. Those motor problems should be taken care of. If none of these cause the problem, you need to dig deeper.

Transformers are another problem that can be very common with these oil burners. With the motor running, carefully rock the transformer on its hinges and look for sparks in the compartment. The sparks should look like small lightning bolts fired at the spot. If the spark is too weak or yellow, replace the transformer. If there are no sparks and it is confirmed to go to the transformer. The transformer is also bad and needs to be replaced.

Oil pumps rarely go bad and if they do, they are hard to find. Another problem with changing out the oil pump, proper equipment is needed to tune up the oil burner after installing the new pump.

A more common oil related problem is a clogged oil filter. I should probably address that sooner. It is very common for the filter to become plugged with dirt or water. Changing the oil filter is fairly easy and should be done at least once a year. A very dirty load of oil can plug the oil filter very quickly. It is very convenient to always have a new oil filter available.

Oil nozzles can also be a problem area. This nozzle sprays oil into the combustion chamber at very high pressure. Oil is broken down into a fine mist to burn more effectively and efficiently. Because of the very fine pores that the oil has to pass through, even the smallest bits of dirt can cause major problems. The oil nozzle assembly is located below the transformer and can be removed by unhooking the oil line from the pump. Remove the lock nut, then slide the nozzle assembly back and up through the hole.

Always use two wrenches to remove the nozzle. The nozzle should always be replaced using the same flow, angle and spray pattern as the nozzle that was removed. Even if it is replaced with the same nozzle, the oil burner should be tuned up as soon as possible after replacement. Not all nozzles are created equal and even subtle differences can affect the performance of an oil burner.

This is by no means a complete problem guide for oil burners. It will give you some basics to see if your oil burner stops working and you need to try running it now. A professional tune up with a combustion analyzer is recommended at least once a year for any OI fired appliance. A new analysis must be completed after any replacement or adjustment. An oil burner that is not properly tuned wastes oil and causes many problems with soot formation, which causes more problems. With oil burners they never pay to cut corners. It will almost always come back to you multiple times with more problems.

This should be a very basic emergency guide to keep your oil burner running if the problem is rooted. Oil burners are delicate burning machines that require a lot of loving care to give them a long life.
