Type II diabetes is often, but not always, related to weight. If the body is overweight, the pancreas has to secrete more insulin, but in turn the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin. Although the pancreas tries harder to maintain the rising blood sugar level, eventually it loses the battle and the blood glucose level rises above the normal values. In most patients, the condition persists for months to years before a person is diagnosed.

Who doesn’t have diabetes? An overweight patient who has had diabetes for a relatively short period of time is the best candidate. Once the body stabilizes at a new, lower weight, the pancreas is again able to meet the body’s insulin needs.

Your doctor may prescribe medications along the way. Weight loss takes time and you don’t want to wait 6 to 12 months to start medication. As you lose weight, the medication can be reduced.

If you are overweight and have been diagnosed with diabetes in the past few months (or maybe even a few years ago). be serious and lose weight. The same advice holds true for anyone in the pre-diabetic stage. Take action now before you are diagnosed with a disease that could haunt you for the rest of your life.
