The Tempting of Adam and Eve

The biblical story of Adam and Eve, who represent the first humans, is an allegory for the fall of mankind and remains a mystery until we understand its hidden symbolism. The symbolic meaning of the following words in the quotation enables us to understand the part of the story where Adam and Eve are tempted and is indicated by the words in parentheses.

After God creates Adam, he tells him that he may freely “eat of any tree” (enjoy in any sense) in the “garden” (the body) but not “of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” It is in the middle of the garden, and according to Eve, “he must not touch it,” or he will “die” (lose his spiritual life—his sense of joy, spiritual power, and immortality). However, the “serpent” (temptation) tells Eve, “You shall not die, for God knows that when you eat of it (the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden) your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Eve succumbs to temptation and eats some of the fruit, assuming it will make one wiser, and also gives some to Adam, who eats it. They felt guilt and shame, because they had disobeyed God’s warning and, as a result, suffered great loss. This part of the allegory can be explained in the context of the ancient scriptures of India as follows.

The inverted tree with roots, trunk and limbs resembles the structure of the nervous system of the human body, and the metaphorical “tree of life” represents the spiritual part of the physical nervous system, the energy channels (pulses) of the body. ). The roots of the tree symbolize these channels in the brain through which the life energy flows and animates the centers of consciousness in the head and spine and throughout the physical body; The trunk represents the energy channels in the spine; And the limbs extending from the trunk represent afferent and efferent energy channels and nerves. Nerves consist of neurons, and each individual neuron has a tree-like structure.

Their sense of God and his “image” as the love, light, intelligence, and power of the immortal soul was almost completely destroyed in them, and they experienced sexual sensations. They felt naked because of the guilt and shame of what they had done and wanted to cover their genitals.

Moreover, they “knew good and evil.” This means that our ancestors judged the things they liked as “good” and the things they disliked as “bad” or “bad”. God is the omnipresent, indivisible spirit in which all things, even those perceived as evil, are united as one, but they began to feel separate by judging and mentally rejecting what they disliked. This made them aware of God – the omnipresent, unifying spirit in all things – and the soul, the image and likeness of God. By judging what they disliked instead of accepting everything as one, their awareness of God, spirit and the power of spirit to manifest material things and experience divine love and unity was greatly diminished.

Thus the first humans lost their heavenly state of consciousness – the paradise of Eden – and looked to the body and material possessions for happiness and security. However, in the absence of God’s love, unity and joy, happiness and security can never be found. Instead, fear, greed, and hatred increased, their bodies became denser, their world changed to reflect their object-bound consciousness, and pain, suffering, fear, and death all became familiar to them. This was a huge loss, because in their original state of consciousness, their spiritual abilities were active and they could manifest whatever they wanted with the divine power within them. The fall of the first man happened long ago and all people on earth are subject to the legacy of dualistic thinking and evil that resulted.

However, reading the first part of Genesis 3:22, one gets the sense that knowing good and evil is godly, as it is usually translated in the present tense: And Jehovah God said, “The man is become one of us, knowing good and evil…” But Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible says that “is” should be translated “was” and suggests that something like the following would be correct: And Jehovah God said, “The man, who was one of us, is now fallen [knowing both good and evil]… ” This makes sense because Adam and Eve were like God before they fell and knew good and evil, and they fell, knowing good and evil, because they lost the sense of God and judged what they did not like as evil. When we transcend the lower, mortal self, called the ego in spiritual writings, we realize that we are the vast, eternal self. Our consciousness will merge with God’s infinite consciousness, and we will expand God’s perfect creation through loving intentions, instead of insulting Him by trying to satisfy individual desires and quarreling with one another. There is hope for humanity, for by following God’s guidance, practicing meditation and patience, and forgiving and loving ourselves and others, the desires of the physical body will be controlled and transcended, our souls will descend into spiritual ignorance and delusion, and we will attain our immortality. And regain the sense of oneness with God.
