The Hakomi Method… is based on five therapeutic principles – mindfulness, organicity, nonviolence, mind-body connection and unity – which give the work a rich meaning and spiritual dimension.
Body psychotherapy research is sparse and generally focused on individuals. Further experimental studies found that body psychotherapy can and does improve couples’ communication, decision-making, and sexuality.
A pilot study used physical psychotherapy techniques with couples where one partner had a traumatic brain injury and the other partner did not. The aim was to learn which common problems in such couples are usefully addressed by somatic or physical psychotherapy interventions. Marital satisfaction and emotional well-being were measured using quantitative tests. A 20-page self-report questionnaire was administered before and after somatic therapy. Some of the topics asked include: decision making, sexuality, self-identity, family, finances, and grief. The study lasted 12 weeks: 2 intake sessions, 9 weeks of somatic therapy and 1 final session. Three couples participated. Marital satisfaction increased significantly. Participants reported: increased awareness/competence of self and partner, improved communication/connection, and increased presence/tangibility.
