A Sampling of Body Psychotherapy Methods to Overcome Relationship Problems

Can body psychotherapy solve sexual and relationship problems?

Body psychotherapy uses a variety of best techniques from somatic experience, metaphor and body image work, empathic listening and feedback, touch, body/mind/spirit awareness and connection, mental health skills and Eastern and Western teachings, psychology, body therapy. and mutual revelations and insights. Can physical therapy solve sex and relationship problems? You be the judge!

Rubenfeld Synergy Method – Developed by Ilana Rubenfeld

RSM helps us learn to listen to the body, become aware of habit patterns and stressors, and decode their messages enabling us to make tangible improvements in our daily lives and relationships. Rubenfeld Synergy is unique in using speech and touch together. Touch heightens awareness, both emotionally and physically, and allows us to explore levels that are difficult to access through speech alone.

Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP) – Dr. Founded by Jack Lee Rosenberg, followed by Diana Esse, Jungian analyst and Dr. Developed with Marjory Rand.

IBP offers therapists and clients a unique way to track body-mind disturbances, which are their own, life’s most basic guidance system. Psychological disturbances include emotional patterns and beliefs developed in childhood that habitually distort current experiences (primary conditioning), our protective defenses (character style), and how we sacrifice our original self for love and approval (agency). Without knowing the difference between psychological disturbances and the core self, we cannot trust our intuition, our inner voice.

An equally important aspect of life’s journey, your inner voice is essential to explore the dilemmas of human existence – questions of existence. We all must face the unanswered questions of life: loneliness, death, life, impermanence, aging, authenticity, creativity, integrity, infinity and more. In other words, all kinds of things happen in life. It is not what happens to you, but how you internally deal with what happens that determines your well-being and quality of life. IBP teaches you how to come from your core knowledge with higher vitality in every aspect of your life.

Core Energetics, created by John Pierakos, MD

John Pierakos, MD, founder and creator of Core Energetics® has often said that each of us has a purpose in life to fulfill our potential as human beings. But what prevents us from becoming what we are capable of? The simple answer is that we learn to restrain ourselves. Through the challenges of growing up in an imperfect family and an imperfect world, we all learn to build walls of protection. As a result, we limit our vitality and distance ourselves from our essential nature, our soul.

….Unlike traditional talk therapy, Core Energetics is a deeply experiential journey of personal healing and self-discovery. Under the supportive guidance of highly trained Core Energetics practitioners, clients will have the opportunity to reclaim denied emotional truths and uncover core qualities that will allow them to find personal fulfillment. This is accomplished by supporting the client to move their body in specific ways that lead to deeper self-awareness and the release of frozen emotions such as anger, fear, sadness, need, sensuality, and ultimately love. Through the Core Energetics experience, clients learn to live more fully in their bodies and live more freely from their hearts.

Bioenergetic analysis – Rooted in the work of Wilhelm Reich and established by Alexander Loewen Bioenergetic Analysis, helps release chronic muscle tension, manage emotions, increase capacity for intimacy, overcome sexual difficulties, and learn new, more fulfilling ways of relating to others. Tenderness, aggressiveness, assertiveness – and their confluence in sexuality – are seen as key life-saving forces. The therapeutic relationship provides a place of safety in which healing begins. The therapist reads the body, resonates with its energy, feels emotions, listens, hears and responds to words. Body language (posture/gesture, breathing, movement, expression) is the focus because it indicates the position on the path to the personhood – from the past to the present and the future. Techniques are used that address the energetic aspect of the individual, including her self-perception, self-expression, and self-efficacy. These include body contact, boundaries, grounding, and understanding muscle tension as a signal of physical and psychological defense against past trauma. The goal of therapy is more than the absence of symptoms – it is to achieve a sense of aliveness, happiness, joy, love – a sense of vibrant health.

BodyNamics – Founded by Lisbeth Marcher

Mutual connection – (When I am all me and all you are, can we be deeply connected?) – is the root driver of development and growth. Our research has shown that there is a series of underlying themes around which connections, bonding and attachment are found. Our clinical experience shows that disruptions in early childhood connections in relation to these themes lead to developmental or in some cases traumatic malformations.

….The physical system emphasizes deep cognitive psychotherapy and relationships, including new research on children’s psychomotor development. The body is integrated into therapy through knowledge of the psychological function of each muscle.

Radical – Developed by Dr Charles Kelly

“Radix” – From the Latin verb, meaning “root” or “source”, which refers to the force that causes all movement, feeling and growth in a person and life. It is the life force…chi…prana…that connects the body, mind, emotions and spirit….Personal growth and healing is an approach to:

o Holistic ~ based on principles of mind-body unity

o Body-centered ~ working directly with the body through movement and breath, body sensation and awareness, energy flow and other non-verbal as well as verbal attention

o Experiential ~ engaging in the ‘here and now’ of your process

o Customer centric ~ based on the unique needs of each client

Hakomi – Developed by Ron Kurtz

Hakomi…draws from the vast worlds of science, spirituality and psychotherapy, yet the practice itself is simple.

The Hakomi Method… is based on five therapeutic principles – mindfulness, organicity, nonviolence, mind-body connection and unity – which give the work a rich meaning and spiritual dimension.

Body psychotherapy research is sparse and generally focused on individuals. Further experimental studies found that body psychotherapy can and does improve couples’ communication, decision-making, and sexuality.

A pilot study used physical psychotherapy techniques with couples where one partner had a traumatic brain injury and the other partner did not. The aim was to learn which common problems in such couples are usefully addressed by somatic or physical psychotherapy interventions. Marital satisfaction and emotional well-being were measured using quantitative tests. A 20-page self-report questionnaire was administered before and after somatic therapy. Some of the topics asked include: decision making, sexuality, self-identity, family, finances, and grief. The study lasted 12 weeks: 2 intake sessions, 9 weeks of somatic therapy and 1 final session. Three couples participated. Marital satisfaction increased significantly. Participants reported: increased awareness/competence of self and partner, improved communication/connection, and increased presence/tangibility.
