The Art of Pranayama in Yoga

Yoga is beyond science or art. It is a philosophy. Yoga is derived from yuj – meaning integration or research. Yoga is defined in the scriptures as chittavrttinirodha (or calming the mind by depriving it of any activity). In other words, it is the process of controlling the mind, ego (ego) and antarendriyas (internal organs). Yoga and Pranayama help. Eastern philosophy says that as we strengthen other organs, we can also strengthen our mind. It is possible to strengthen the mind through pranayama, meditation and yoga, because the mind is also an organ.

Pranayama helps to increase and become one’s concentration Antamukham Or be able to see your own soul through yourself. Prana It is the life force that is the essence of mental, spiritual and cosmic energy. Here, breathing is only a superficial or minute part of pranayama practice.

dimensions That is Control or control. So, pranayama means controlling the breath by increasing, decreasing and stopping your breath.

What happens during Pranayama?

Pranayama includes the following steps:

Inhalation – Breathing in

Dharana – retention of breath

Exhalation – exhalation

Hold your breath while exhaling

During pranayama the chest moves in simple harmonic motion in three different ways/directions- vertical, horizontal and circumferential motion, which concentrates the energy in a particular place. Pranayama is something that is higher than yoga. Practice three or four hours after meals, early in the morning, preferably at Brahma Muhurta (forty-five minutes before sunrise).

To the body – while breathing is controlled, the heart rate slows down; It increases oxygen supply, increases physical relaxation and cell-relaxation, increases mental alertness, it regains control of breathing, it slows metabolism and the body goes into hibernation, thus increasing energy.

To the Mind – When the breathing slows down, the alertness of the mind increases by concentrating only on breath control. This improves the breathing rhythm. Such regular breathing develops order. The senses of ekattvam (onlineness – perceiving things as one truth) and sukshmatvam (subtlety – perceiving quickly) are improved. Thus there is a possibility of neuro-physiological relaxation.

In pranayama, complete filling and emptying of the lungs takes place – just as we empty a swimming pool or a well. It helps in fresh breath. Heart rate decreases because all resources are used – its efficiency is increased, heart muscle strength is improved, micro/capillary circulation is improved, cell nutrition is improved. All this was done not by physical exertion but only by controlling the breath. It saves physical energy.

Relation of Pranayama to various body systems:

Respiratory system:

Slow breathing through pranayama improves oxygenation time. It improves oxygen itself. Even through slow breathing, oxygen is absorbed. It improves capillary circulation and helps nourish the cells. This is in contrast to rapid breathing (as in other exercises) which can lead to hyperventilation or dizziness or weakness due to overexertion. In yoga and pranayama, cellular regeneration is increased due to increased cell wear and tear and decreased cellular wear and tear. It helps in cellular relaxation, increases blood circulation, boosts local immunity, reduces respiratory infections and protects, in today’s polluted environment.

Digestive System:

Slow breathing helps stimulate the taste buds and improves secretion. It helps in better digestion of carbohydrates – digestion starts in the mouth itself. Diaphragmatic massage in pranayama helps to massage the intestines. This prevents blood from pooling in the blood vessels and thus improves the overall digestive process, thereby reducing and preventing disorders like constipation and indigestion.

Renal System:

Forced blood circulation, effective filtering is improved, toxic substances are eliminated, this helps in controlling kidney disorders like kidney failure.

Integumentary System:

Since the skin is a superficial organ, the supply of oxygen to the skin is very less, which is why we suffer from skin disorders. Oxygen supply to the skin is improved through pranayama and yoga. It supplies the skin with nutrients, improves hydration, removes waste and prevents skin disorders.

Endocrine System:

Forced circulation during yoga and pranayama increases the supply of oxygen, energy and nutrients to the pituitary gland (the main gland located in the brain) and this improves and stimulates the activity of all other glands.

Nervous System:

Forced circulation during pranayama and yogasana increases cerebral circulation, calms the nerves and prevents and controls nervous system disorders.

Pranayama can be prescribed in all anxiety disorders like high and low blood pressure syndrome, allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, chronic headache, migraine, peptic ulcer, psoriasis. It is important to recognize that allergies are the main cause of all rhinitis syndromes and that pranayama treats these allergies rather than reducing ailments like rhinitis.
