How to Evoke Imagery, Emotions and Ideas in Writing Poetry That Captures Your Readers Imagination

In the previous article, “How to Write Poems That Capture the Heart and Imagination of Your Readers,” we said that poems express ideas, experiences, or emotions in a more concentrated form than ordinary writing, prose, or speech. They may rhyme or have a rhythmic pattern of words. They are one of the most powerful forms of expression in language. So how can you write a poem that really conveys what you want to say? Here are some key factors in designing and developing poetic form. Follow these key steps to write a poem that captures your feelings, ideas, and experiences in heart-warming word imagery.

Capture image ideas in writing

Poetry is about creating images in the reader’s mind. To help you accomplish this, use a variety of image ideas to like the following.

o Allusion – A form of indirect reference usually made between different phrases, lines or sentences

o Simile – used to compare two or more things that are not the same by using the word “like” (her hair is like a stream of coffee sparkling in the mountain sunlight).

o Symbolism or Metaphor – used to compare two or more things that are different by using “like” or “is” as in “all the world is a stage”, “red as a mulberry”, “black as midnight in Cyprus swamps”, etc.

Establish a logical progression of ideas used in the poem

The lines, thoughts, and ideas expressed in your poem should flow smoothly from one to the next. Don’t jump irrationally. Let your poetry flow rhythmically like a gentle stream flowing through the smooth stones of a brook softly murmuring in a grassy meadow.

State the theme of the poem in one stanza

Create a “theme verse” that can be used repeatedly in your poem to tie its verses together. Your poem will look and feel much better when it is read using this main aspect. A love poem theme verse can be one that begins or ends with something like:

o Did I tell you that…

o As always, your thoughts…

o Any key word or phrase used repeatedly to begin or end a stanza or verses

Other very useful aids

To help you write your poem, try these dynamic aids:

o A rhyming dictionary – invaluable for finding rhymes for low-frequency or hard-to-rhyme words

o Thesaurus – an indispensable tool to help you expand the vocabulary used in your poem (personally, I like Rodale’s much better than Roget’s).

o Alliteration – the repetition of consonant sounds in two or more words in a phrase or line such as: beautiful bubbling brown sugar or shafts of shining sunlight

o Assonance – same sound, like assonance, but used within letters within a string of words (birthday weather, dad’s brother, next math, etc. to give you an idea)

o Consonants – repetition of certain stressed syllables in a pair, group or string of words (taker, baker, maker, shaker, quaker but not fast)

o Onomatopoeia – words that imitate sounds by their pronunciation. Words like whistle, tweet, boom, bag, paw, crash, crunch, slam, zoom, snap, crackle, pop and zing fit into this category.

These steps will help you write poems that will evoke the emotions and feelings of your readers and help you make your poetry writing stand out.
