Yoga and the Meaning of Namaste

The gesture Namaste represents the belief that each of us has a divine spark that resides in the heart chakra. Gesture is the acknowledgment of spirit in one by spirit in another. “Naam” means bow, “as” means I and “te” means you. So Namaste literally means “I bow to you” or “I bow to you.”

To say Namaste, we place our hands over the heart chakra, close our eyes and bow our heads. It can also be done by placing the hands together in front of the third eye, bowing the head and then bringing the hands up to the heart. This is a particularly deep form of respect. Although in the West the word “Namaste” is usually uttered in conjunction with a gesture, but in India, it is understood that the gesture itself signifies Namaste, and therefore, saying the word while bowing is unnecessary.

We bring hands together over the heart chakra to increase the flow of divine love. Bowing the head and closing the eyes helps the mind surrender to the divine within the heart. One can say Namaste to oneself as a meditation technique to go deep within the heart chakra; It is also a beautiful, albeit quick, meditation when done with someone else.

For teacher and student, namaste allows two individuals to come together in a space of connection and timelessness free from the constraints of ego-connection. Deep soul union can blossom if surrendered with deep emotion and mind.

Ideally, Namaste should be done both at the beginning and end of class. Usually, this is done at the end of class because the mind is less active and the energy in the room is more calm. Teachers begin namaste as a sign of gratitude and respect, and in turn invite students to connect with their lineage, allowing the truth to flow—the truth that we are all one when we live wholeheartedly.
