Landscaping Weed Barrier Fabric – How to Install Landscape Fabric
When using landscaping fabric, preparing the ground for the project is just as important as the quality of the materials you use. Many people create a weed barrier directly over an existing or barely prepared area, but with good preparation the best performance and long-lasting results are more likely.
to begin with
Measure and mark the area. Most professionals use reversible marking paint, but you can also use string, sticks, rocks, hoses, or whatever you have available. Purchase or order your landscape fabric to ensure it is on hand when you begin your project.
Remove all vegetation
Once your project area has been measured and marked, remove all vegetation. Depending on the area you are working in, there are many ways to remove plants and vegetation.
For lawn areas that are to be covered and/or planted areas, we always double apply a non-selective herbicide such as Round Up. Make sure the area is actively growing, spray the herbicide as directed, and then let it work. 5 to 7 days after application, begin watering the area to encourage growth of surviving and viable seeds. Repeat the herbicide application. If necessary, you can repeat again.
In some cases we use a sod cutter to remove the top few inches of the lawn. Generally, this is done after we’ve killed all the weeds and it’s mainly to loosen the area and make room for mulch, rock or other ground cover.
I have seen other professionals install landscaping fabric in areas where only the mulch was cut but not killed with herbicide. I don’t recommend it. Sod cutters only cut the top of the grass and do nothing to kill the roots. This can be a future problem if you have deep-rooted invasive weeds or grass like bermuda.
For non-lawn and old flower bed areas, you can use the herbicide method mentioned above. And for all areas including lawn area, you can use herbicide method or solarization.
Solarization basically means baking the soil and exposing it to extremely high temperatures that kill weed seeds and plants. This process is very simple and works very well but it takes the most time to do.
Prepare the soil
If you plan to plant plants in the area where you will install the fabric, you need to work in soil amendment and nutrients before installation. If possible, and I recommend it, use organic slow release nutrients and compost. You should also test the pH of the soil and add appropriate amounts of lime or sulfur if necessary.
Once the weed barrier is established, you can only add top-applied chemical fertilizers and not till the soil. Of course, you can add amendments to each hole as you plant. However, it is time consuming, messy and does not extend beyond the plant’s root zone.
Use a rotor tiller or hoe to amend the soil surface 4 to 6 inches and rotate the nutrients. Remove stones, sticks, debris and break up debris. Smooth the surface area.
Install a watering system
If you have an idea of where your plants will be and plan to have an automatic drip sprinkler system, now is the time to put it in place. Attach your main feeder hose and run the drip tube and emitter to where your plants will be. If you are planning on a bubbler system, it should be installed before the area is manicured.
Installing the fabric
The easiest way to do this is to remove the obstruction first before you plant. Some people recommend using safety pins to hold the contents. It is an option. However, if you want to save costs, you can press the edges with the ground cover you want to use. We usually put sacking or mulch, rocks or other ground cover on the edge and spread it after we plant.
I have seen some people plant the plants first and then plant them on top of the plants. This is usually hard on the tree, breaks branches and is very time consuming.
You can use a sharp knife or utility razor to cut the fabric, but the best and easiest way to cut long runs is to use a sharp pair of scissors. And instead of driving the scissors, keep them half open where the blades form a “V”. Hold the material where the two blades meet in the “V” and push them through the cloth.
Mark your plant area or set plants to get a view. Use a sharp knife, razor or scissors and cut an “x” in the fabric in the shape of your pot or root ball. Do not cut the size of the pot. Just cut the “x” and fold the flaps down. Make a hole. Plant and plant properly. Gently place the flaps next to the plant.
Now place 2 to 4 inches of your chosen ground cover on the section and press the cut flaps down to hold them in place.
Trim any excess landscaping fabric around the edges and make sure it stays tight around the edges.
