Mother’s Day and Its Birth

There are many exciting and glamorous professions in the world but none are as neglected, trivialized and taken for granted as motherhood. At its core the label of mother is often underestimated and associated with a mere caretaker. However, this understated, and possibly apathetic, description seems to diminish the true value and importance of motherhood. Mothers, these supernatural beings who immerse themselves in their main passion which includes not only taking care of their children but also transforming themselves into the work required for their families. They can be primary informal health care practitioners, nutritionists, teachers, psychologists, emotional support systems, protectors from all evil, and sometimes even wardens. If this sounds like the type of person who deserves the label “hero” – well, yes, of course. Their unconditional love, selfless commitment and dedication as well as their strong instinct for philanthropy is matched only by the behavior of their fellow mothers. There is a day each year during which it is celebrated for those who nurture life and nurture character who are often taken for granted, and even overlooked. Every year on the second Sunday in May, children across the United States are given the opportunity to demonstrate. Their love and appreciation for the only person who has stood by them unconditionally in every way since conception; This day is aptly named Mother’s Day.

Many people wonder about the origin of Mother’s Day. Are they religious, political, or based on the product of a marketing plan created by a genius employee? Well, you may be surprised to know that this holiday was the brain child of an American woman who later regretted and opposed the idea she created.

We all know that Mother’s Day was founded by Anna Jarvis, but she was inspired by a powerful parenting figure in her life, her mother, Anne Reeves Jarvis, who pioneered the design of child rearing practices. According to History.com, Ann Reeves Jarvis started the “Mother’s Day Work Club” during the Civil War in an effort to teach women how to properly care for their children. Then in 1868 she created “Mother’s Friendship Day” to promote reconciliation efforts between Confederate and Union soldiers. This was just one of the precursors to the beginning of Mother’s Day as a national holiday. For example there were other women like Julia Howe, who tried to create a “Mother’s Day Proclamation” in 1870 to promote world peace.

According to History.com, Anna Jarvis, ironically childless her entire life, was inspired to celebrate the sacrifices mothers make after her mother’s death in 1905. She petitioned a Philadelphia department store owner to financially support the first official Mother’s Day celebration, an event attended by thousands. After the success of this event, she decided to make Mother’s Day a national holiday. She achieved her goal through her efforts to reach out and engage politicians and local newspapers to honor motherhood, and by creating the Mother’s Day International Association. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson declared that the second Sunday in May was a special holiday called Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, although Anna Jarvis initially celebrated this victory for all mothers, she quickly realized that the ideas and sentiments behind the holiday were being exploited. As time passed, Anna noticed that the holiday was becoming increasingly commercialized, and by the 1920s she protested corporate profiteering by the flower and candy industries. Ironically, by the time she died in 1948, she had spent much of her fortune trying to disavow and remove the holiday from the calendar.

Although Anna Jarvis failed to remove Mother’s Day from the American calendar, perhaps there are still lessons to be learned from her efforts. Before making the traditional flowers or chocolates for this holiday, perhaps this year, the children of this great nation should reflect on Anna Jarvis and her work and devote quality time and effort to truly celebrating and honoring the sacrifices their mothers made for them. .
