Speed Reading Tactics – Should Your Focus Be on Eye Speed?
As a speed reading coach, I am often asked the question, “How can I improve my comprehension as well as my speed?” It seems that everyone gets the “speed” of the eye area, but understanding, or grasping, content is a question or challenge for most people. The mind’s response to print is not as important as eye speed.
First, all approaches to speed reading involve eye movement training. The goal is to make the mechanical aspects of speed reading as efficient as possible. There are various methods to accomplish this. Unfortunately some programs are based on the outdated method of increasing the “visual eye span” or the number of words the eyes can take in or are fixed for each stop.
Instead of focusing on increasing eye span, training should focus on increasing the size of “meaning units”. A meaning unit consists of several words within each fixation. This is best determined by the number of meaningful words for each eye stop. Word meaning groups may vary in size and shape on the printed page. Thus “training” to take x number of words for each stop/fixation is the misguided approach that many/most programs teach.
So instead of focusing on “word groups,” training should recognize that natural vision experience is dimensional. What this means for the reader is that the eyes sometimes take in 3-6 lines of words at a time, and depending on the width of the print, the eyes do not move horizontally for each stop, but also vertically.
This “search for meaning” doesn’t require regimented pacing with x number of words in a line in a “word group”, but rather moving the eyes in a more natural flow to allow the mind to find meaning through the words. Our mind is drawn to meaningful words. In fact, the mind often ignores meaningless words like “a,” “the,” “of,” etc. That’s why proof-reading is so difficult. The mind fills in what should be there.
When the mind responds meaningfully to an impression, perception begins.
To get the mind to respond to print, prepare using these techniques:
1. Before starting, clear your mind The mind is designed to focus on one thing at a time. Because this goes against our daily routine in today’s work world, you need to remind yourself to do this. All effective reading requires concentration, whether done speedily or not.
2. See above A complete document to get you in the “ballpark” (concept) of what you’re reading.
3. Establish your purpose. Why are you reading this? What do you need to find? etc.
4. If the document is several pages long, or the book is long, skim read and sample.
5. Summarize Ask yourself questions about your understanding frequently and at well-defined points.
6. Read a wide variety of topics To give your mind a wide database from which to draw its response. Dysfunctional readers tend not to read more than they need to get by. Hence comprehension is more challenging.
By practicing these and other mind-response strategies, your mind will be better prepared to respond more quickly to print in a meaningful way. As you do this, the eye movement simply serves as a mechanism for your mind to respond. Otherwise moving your eyes at 5000 words per minute is pointless.
Speed Reading speed can only be measured, as can the speed of the mind’s response to print. This is perception. In fact, a trained speed reader can read in the thousands of words per minute range and do so with good comprehension because the mind is fully engaged. Comprehension will improve if the reader concentrates and concentrates on the subject with complete absorption of the mind. You can learn how to do this. All it takes is proper training and proper practice.
