Aromatherapy For Travel – 4 Key Essential Oils to Tackle Travel Stress & Upsets

Summer is here and for most people that means holiday travel season. Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, taking a long trip or a weekend getaway, no matter what time of year it is, it helps to be prepared for some unexpected discomforts and minor ailments that can sometimes turn out well. good holiday

One of the biggest stressors is the stress that comes with traveling – delays, canceled or missed flights, lost luggage or misplaced documents, flat tires or other major car trouble, motion sickness, jet lag, and various camping-related mishaps. .

Then there are the more common culprits such as colds and allergies, stomach upset or digestive stress, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, minor cuts and bruises, blisters, rashes or hives, chafing and sunburn.

There are many surprisingly simple ways you can use essential oils alone or with other plant-based ingredients to combat these problems and avoid the kind of misery that can make you wish you could stay home.

1. Colds, allergies and sinus congestion

With trees, flowers and grass in full bloom, pollen is becoming synonymous with summer allergies everywhere. Then there’s congestion, along with minor colds that you can pick up from airborne bacteria on planes, trains, and buses, not to mention airports and climate-controlled hotels. To reduce the chance of someone else catching a cold, wash your hands frequently with soap and whenever possible, carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer (preferably made with essential oils) with you.

To relieve congestion, eucalyptus radiata essential oil is your best bet. It is the mildest and safest of the various types of eucalyptus available and can be applied repeatedly without irritation. In extreme cases, a trace amount of peppermint essential oil on the back of the roof of your mouth can provide quick and effective relief.

2. Stomach or digestive stress

There are many essential oils that help with stomach pain and indigestion, including sweet fennel, ginger, lemon, peppermint, and tea tree. Add 1 drop of peppermint and 2 drops of sweet fennel to 24 ounces of pure water to relieve minor nausea and indigestion. It makes a cool, refreshing drink that you can use in place of plain drinking water. For acute, quick relief of indigestion or nausea, add a drop of peppermint or ginger to a teaspoon of honey and steep in a cup of hot water or herbal tea (chamomile, ginger, or licorice root tea will increase effectiveness). For quick relief from diarrhea, add a drop of tea tree oil to a cup of chamomile or peppermint tea (or hot water if tea is not available, but be prepared for an unpleasant taste). Repeat until the discomfort subsides.

3. Headache and/or insomnia

Lavender essential oil is a remarkably effective antidote for minor headaches and accompanying muscle tension, and can provide a sense of calm when you’re having trouble sleeping in an awkward or uncomfortable position. For migraine headache relief try our Head A blend, which combines lavender with peppermint (a cooling analgesic), marjoram (sedative and muscle relaxant), basil and chamomile, and is pre-diluted in jojoba oil to apply directly to the affected area. With the exception of lavender and tea tree, essential oils should be used with a portable diffuser. If you’re camping or somewhere you can’t use a diffuser, put a drop or two on a handkerchief or bandana and wrap around your head or tuck under a pillow and breathe in the vapors. Do not overuse.

4. Fatigue

Jet lag, stress, long drives, and prolonged sightseeing (especially walking) can cause tiredness and fatigue. The best way to deal with this is to pace yourself, try not to crash your schedule with more activities than you can realistically handle, eat plenty of protein (preferably at breakfast) and always stay hydrated. Essential oils that can help are eucalyptus (mental clarity) and peppermint (stimulant), or try our Stay Alert diffuser blend, which includes rosemary, cinnamon leaf, orange and cedar wood. Use it with a car scent diffuser to help you stay awake during long drives. To soothe tired and aching feet, add a drop to a warm foot bath, or add several drops to a teaspoon of carrier oil for a stimulating foot massage.

5. Minor cuts, scrapes and other skin eruptions

Minor injuries (ie, splinters, hangnails, insect bites, blisters, cuts, scrapes, and burns) must be disinfected and treated immediately or they can cause painful burns and various types of uncomfortable skin eruptions. That’s when tea tree oil can become a trusted and trusted friend! It kills bacteria, cleans wounds and promotes faster healing. Like lavender, it can be applied “neatly” (directly) to the skin. Think of it as an invisible liquid band aid. Our Boo Boo blend, which combines tea tree with lavender, geranium and chamomile (anti-inflammatory) is also an excellent choice. For sunburn relief, mix 1 teaspoon of lavender or boo boo mixture with 4 ounces of aloe vera juice and put in a spritzer bottle. Substitute 1 ounce of peppermint hydrosol for aloe vera juice to increase the cooling effect. Shake well and spray liberally — as often as needed for pain relief and speedy recovery.

In a nutshell, the four main essential oils you need in your travel kit are: peppermint (headaches, fatigue, indigestion, and congestion), eucalyptus (congestion and fatigue), tea tree (diarrhea, cuts and wounds, antiseptic), and lavender (headaches, skin eruptions and inflammations, tension, muscle tension, insomnia).
