This is not the time to be complacent or complacent. We must take positive and constructive action. Disaster and destruction are coming. We must not shy away from the truth no matter how inconvenient it may be. This is the time to put our shoulders to the wheel and focus with all our concentration. Because global warming is coming to swallow us up. And if we waste too much time, it will really catch up with us. Then there will be only darkness around. We will be engulfed by the greatest calamity imaginable, which we have only talked about and actually seen in exciting movies until now. If global warming were to spread its tentacles over us, we would no longer be reading this article. Because mankind will become extinct!
Understanding Global Warming
Global warming is a phenomenon that has been happening for a long time. Our blue planet is getting warmer due to increased carbon dioxide levels. Fossil fuels and coal, natural gas, petroleum, crude oil, oil shale etc. Burning of non-renewable resources like these has produced tons and tons of carbon dioxide. The use of fossil fuels began on a widespread basis. 16th century during the advent of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain and the colonies of Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution saw the invention of the fossil fuel powered steam engine. But over the centuries, scientists slowly discovered that burning fossil fuels causes high levels of air pollution. Combustion of fossil fuels releases harmful gases like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide etc. into the atmosphere. These toxic gases adversely affect our planet’s climate and environment. They also affect our health negatively.
Sulfur and nitrogen oxides form corrosive acids when dissolved in water, capable of irreparably damaging mausoleums and historical monuments made of marble.
Sulfur dioxide plus water gives sulfuric acid (a very corrosive acid).
Nitrogen dioxide plus water gives nitric acid (a very corrosive acid).
Therefore, when such toxic gases dissolve in rain water and form its mixture, the inevitable result is an acidic type of rain called acid rain. This acid rain can eat away the surface of the architectural splendor as mentioned above. A refinery near the Taj Mahal in Agra, India was releasing such noxious gases into the air above the mausoleum. These gases produced acid rain which had an absorbent effect on the immaculate white marble surface of the Taj. The destruction was so terrible that the management of the refinery had to be roped in by the Government of India and environmental activists. The refinery had been asked to reduce emissions and shut down some of its operations to prevent the collapse of the grand monument and tomb of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal (after whom the monument is named). Totally dusty. The refinery did its best by modernizing some of its production methods, planting numerous trees, and developing an ecological park that is now home to many migratory and rare species of birds. Such a sincere response from the refinery to protect one of the seven modern wonders of the world from decay has pleased the government and activists. However, environmental observers should not sleep. There are hundreds of industries around the world that violate environmental laws and regulations every day. Steps towards protecting the environment should be implemented on a long-term basis. It is neither desirable nor useful to suddenly embark on short-term environmental projects and ‘environmental protection schemes’ for publicity and image enhancement. Sustainable development and environmental conservation are the only weapons to fight global warming.
The temperature of our planet is increasing due to the greenhouse effect. Burning fossil fuels emits greenhouse gases. Some well-known greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane. These greenhouse gases absorb infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases have the tendency to trap heat and increase the temperature of our planet. Hence, due to these greenhouse gases, our planet is heating up tremendously and global warming is starting. This continued increase in temperature could have catastrophic and far-reaching effects on our planet and our lives. Warmer air causes glaciers to melt and snow-capped mountain peaks to melt. If the heat is too intense, the ice and snow of most of the world’s massifs will melt very rapidly. Melted ice and snow will flow into rivers and eventually into the sea, causing an unprecedented rise in sea level. Rivers will swell and seas will overflow and flood the land. Coastlines will disappear and entire countries will sink. In addition to global floods, other effects of global warming are extreme weather patterns such as heat waves and cold waves, floods and droughts, and violent storms.
Deforestation is another aspect that accelerates global warming as it causes an abnormal increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Global warming has already hit our planet. However, when global warming kicks into high gear, it will uproot all existing forests on our planet and cause total destruction of marine life. So, deforestation promotes global warming and global warming reduces forests. What a vicious circle!
The ozone layer that protects our planet from the sun’s direct and unforgiving ultraviolet (UV) rays is slowly depleting. Certain gases known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or Freons and bromofluorocarbons or halons that are produced by our manufacturing industries are eating into the ozone layer. Ozone layer is also being destroyed due to aerosols produced by various industries. This depletion of the ozone layer is creating a hole or depression in the ozone layer, commonly called an ozone hole. As the area of the ozone hole increases, it allows more UV rays to enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Due to the increasing concentration of UV light in the Earth’s atmosphere, our planet is becoming uninhabitable. Excessive exposure to UV light causes skin cancer and cataracts in humans. Excessive exposure to UV light also causes irreversible damage to various species of animals and plants. The result is an insurmountable problem in the food chain. Ozone layer depletion is a very controversial issue because of its advantages and disadvantages. The irony of the ‘(w)hole’ substance is that ozone is a greenhouse gas. Most of it will lead to global warming while very little of it will affect the human population suffering from skin cancer.
This recession is different from the economic recession we have experienced recently. We have proven time and time again that we can bounce back from recessionary recessions, yet we have not proven to ourselves or anyone else that we can remain obscure or unaffected if all the world’s ice caps and glaciers melt and be consumed. The comprehensive and terrifying phenomenon of global warming.
Are we ready…?
Sadly, we are least prepared to deal with such a huge disaster. We are divided among ourselves about which nations should cut emissions and by how much. At various meetings and summits, we only squabble over numbers, levels and percentages, while Earth’s biological clock ticks ominously away. Developed, developing and underdeveloped nations are not united on the global warming score. Everyone agrees that global warming is a menace that leads to universal catastrophe and destruction. But the key point of contention is which country is responsible and which country should take the lead in reducing emissions. Blame games and payoffs are rampant, and finger-pointing, blame-shifting, and accusations and counter-accusations seem to be the order of the day, while global warming continues to change our planet. Developed nations always try to pressure and bully the less developed nations while the less developed nations clamor to support the less developed nations. The mercury shows no signs of abating. It keeps shooting at a frightening pace as politics, homogeneity, heated debates, power and speeches rule.
The real enemy
What on earth are we all doing? Time will never stop. Arise, awake, leave all of you from sleep this strife and strife. Do we want another catastrophe like the one that happened 65 million years ago and wiped out all the dinosaurs on the planet? No. We certainly don’t want to perish. So what is stopping us from uniting against a common cause? What is keeping us from putting aside our personal concerns? After all, in fact, we are all created by the same Creator. Instead of highlighting this fact, why are we choosing to forget it and focus on our various disparities, dividing walls from nation to nation, state to state, race to race and human to human? Is there a greater enemy than global warming? The enemy within us?
The choice is ours. Either we join hands and work together to defeat global warming, or let the enemy within us create more factions among us and defeat us all. If we fail to keep the enemy within us at bay, he will eventually conquer us all. And, if we, the 21st century humans living on this beautiful earth are so vile and vile as to prefer protecting power and politics, vested interests and racism over our endangered planet, then we must be defeated by global warming. Because our real adversary, it seems, is not global warming We ourselves.
