Who Is Responsible For Our Water Pollution Woes?

Life on our earth is a delicate balance. If something is broken, many unexpected changes occur. For example, our freshwater ecosystems. Many negative things happen when humans allow chemicals, pesticides, wastes and the like to enter the water. Plants and aquatic animals can be killed, food supplies can be depleted, and clean water can become scarce. You’ve probably heard a lot about water pollution, but do you really know what it is and what it can do?

For starters, there are two basic types of water pollution:

* Point source pollution means pollutants coming from a specific location

* Non-point pollution is when the overall source is something less specific, such as agricultural runoff or highway dirt

Both types of pollution are responsible for environmental and health problems; However, it is very difficult to control non-point source pollution that can be traced back to a single source.

Industrial, livestock and chemical wastes that are allowed to flow into rivers and streams are major sources of pollution. The water they get becomes toxic, oxygen levels drop and aquatic life dies. Industries such as refineries, automotive plants, paper mills, and power plants are known to dispose of waste products by discharging them into rivers. For example, when heated water is released from a power plant, it reduces the amount of oxygen in the water, causing aquatic plants and animals to die.

Additionally, organic waste is generated by slaughterhouses, meat processing plants, and other types of animal production industries. Microorganisms break down organic waste materials using oxygen in the water. This has often happened when a body of water starts to emit an offensive smell. Inorganic wastes are toxic substances that, if exposed to sufficient amounts, can disrupt the body’s natural processes. These wastes include heavy metals, acids, mercury and other substances that are by-products of the industry.

You might think that all the blame for water pollution can be laid at the door of industry and agriculture, but these are only the tip of the iceberg. In fact, we as individuals are responsible for the largest percentage of pollution. There are approximately 7 billion people living in the world today, and if each of them dumped or flushed one pollutant into our water sources today, that would mean 7 billion non-agricultural contaminants.

For example, if you throw a plastic water bottle into a lake or river today, you may be responsible for the death of countless aquatic creatures. Fish and other animals can become entangled in plastic netting, wire and pop can holders, or they eat small pieces of plastic that can kill them. It is estimated that one plastic bottle takes 450 to 1000 years to decompose. Imagine how many animals could be lost in that time period, then multiply that by 7 billion times.

Other ways in which people contribute to the pollution problem include household waste and sewage disposal, and the cleaning products and toiletries we all use every day. Each of these products that we have come to rely on can contribute to your share of the pollution problem.
