The Enchanting Lakhania Dari Waterfalls Near Varanasi – Paradise in the Hills
Many people claim that there are no adventure spots in Varanasi and sometimes the spiritual overdose in Varanasi gets on the nerves. There is no denying that there are some of us who love the outdoors. Nature is a great aphrodisiac for people who love jungle treks, hill climbs, bird watching. And it just so happens that there are some beautiful, scenic spots near Varanasi in the neighboring district of Mirzapur where small tribal settlements are located on the hills. The area does not have such high hills formed from the famous Chunar rocks – extremely hard rocks used to build huge forts in the past.
About 55 km from Varanasi city, nestled in the hills is a beautiful waterfall that cascades down into a beautiful lake surrounded by rocky cliffs on all sides. The water of the fall flows downwards as a small stream whose bed is covered with boulders for nearly a mile. And to reach the waterfall, you have to climb, slide, walk, twist and turn through these holes. There is no other way, you see. Interested? Read on.
The place we are talking about is Lakhania Dari and the perfect place to spend a day away from the busy streets of Varanasi. And once you get outside the city limits, the journey to the place becomes refreshing. The tree-lined road stretched to green fields and small rocky hills. A little further, you can see small tribal settlements and small tribal children tending to the river stream. This place is on the national highway connecting Varanasi to Robertsganj and if you don’t know the place it is easy to miss the entrance to Lakhnia Valley. The entrance is just around a bend with a sign saying Lakhni Dari and there is a small shop owned by Lahan Lal who sells packaged water, chai (tea) and some snacks. Leave the road and climb up and you’ll see a track through the bushes not too far away, you’ll see streams through a waterfall with boulders standing just the right amount, offering a cool site to sit down and grab your bottle. Beer or juice – the choice is of course yours.
But this is only for picnickers. If you really want to reach the falls, you will have to trek about a mile through these craters, yes, you heard that right. You have to climb and jump over these pits to reach the water falls. And let me tell you it’s not easy. You have to be very careful or you will end up with a sprained ankle. So when you decide to go, take some sturdy shoes with a firm grip. If you slip, your head is on a rock. And don’t go there in rainy season, unless you are an expert in rock climbing. Those rocks can get very slippery.
On your way to the waterfall you will see some caves that are high on the face of the mountain walls. The area is said to have been inhabited by men who roamed and hunted before the invention of television and telephones. But only a trained climber with proper equipment can reach the caves. So after an arduous trek through the rocky bed, when you finally reach the waterfall – you’ll love it, it’s really worth the journey. The water where it falls has formed a small pool and the pool is surrounded by rocky cliffs on the other two sides where you can hear the mesmerizing sound of the falling water. The area is relatively cool and so is the water, and if you are a good swimmer, jump in, well. How deep is the lake? Nobody knows. Can’t be too deep though. Just to find a way, jump!
The water is clean and cold. This place is frequented by very few people as many are not aware of its existence. On Sundays, however, you’ll see a throng of families gathered for the outing. A good idea is to pack some ice and beer bottles and lay down and relax on the rocks near the lake. Don’t forget to pack water bottles and fresh juices for the trip. A short trek makes you thirsty if it’s a hot day. And yes, we request you to take back your empty bottles and food packets etc and not litter like many others. We don’t want to set a bad example, do we?
