Fishing Season: Spring. What Do We Need?

early spring. I consider this period to be the most difficult to find and catch fish. On large rivers, the snow has already come down, but the water is cold due to the melting of snow and ice in the creeks and the “hard” water entering the river bed. Fish are inactive at this time.

It is not difficult to determine this period. Snow has already fallen, but nature has not yet awakened. The appearance of the rivers is dull gray, and the banks, full of bushes and bare branches of trees, do not add optimism to the first fishermen already sitting near the spring waters.

But is everything so hopeless? No, you can fish at this time. Let us define together the conditions that will not let us go home without being caught this time.

I will give you an example of a river that I live near and often fish. I will explain all the necessary nuances.

Choose a place for fishing

The floodplain of my river is such that on the left, on the shallower and shallower bank, there is water vegetation 12-15 meters from the water’s edge. The depth at such a distance is negligible. The right bank is steeper and aquatic vegetation begins in 3-5 m. It’s very deep here. Which shore to choose?

It should be noted that during periods of increased solar activity, water is stratified by temperature. Warm water is found in shallow bays on the northern coast. So, the left bank, which is shallow and therefore warmer, with aquatic plants away from the water’s edge at a shallow depth, which also gives the fish a sense of security (considering the transparency of the water) is preferable. If we add the presence of warm sewage to the places mentioned above, this is probably the place that we should pay attention to first of all. Although, of course, this is just a general discussion. A guide to action so to speak. I think that practically all anglers in their region know well the places where the season is best from year to year. Don’t philosophize, rape them first!

A way of fishing

The feeder, I believe, is just the same manipulation that will not allow the early spring river to be empty. And here it is worth saying at least a few words about the necessary equipment. And in the feeder, above all, there is a rod that has certain qualities. Personally, I use the rod “Pride” from TM “Flagman”. This heavy-duty feeder with a length of 3.6 meters allows you to drop a feeder weighing 125 grams. The rod is light and reliable, it is equipped with three adjustable tops and different stiffnesses and meets all fishing conditions – from standing water to strong currents, and provides excellent visual control. Finally, the catching process requires tracking the most delicate “spring” bite of inactive fish. Knowing that not everyone can afford a luxury like a branded feeder rod, I mean you can grab any cheap spinning or fishing rod.

Since we fish in shallow water near the shore, a monolayer with a breaking load of three kilograms (I use a Salmo Evolution with a diameter of 0.17) is perfect. You should not add thick. With this line, I made long enough casts and dug solid fish on “loading” from the eighty-gram feeder, without using any shock-leader! Those who can afford it, try to rope them. I have now switched from Berkley to “Fireline” and I can say that in some cases it is the best option for catching feeders. The braids are strong and strong, and at the same time thin, and most importantly, they have a quality that is very important for this type of grip – they are very sensitive!

Hook for feeder

I use a hook from Gamakatsu No. 16 in the F-21 series. Very thin, strong, allows to hold a large fish. In addition, they are perfectly suited to the addition of bloodworms, which is the number one bait during the described period.

feeders

open type. I use the feeder type, the bottom of which is two lead “skis”, connected together by wire mesh. The top is a cylindrical grid. When lifting this feeder from the bottom, the lead “ski” plays the role of underwater fins, and the mesh between them plays the role of a stabilizer, which makes it easier to tear the feeder from the bottom and deliver it to the shore. The tank is built in the main line. Knitting a loop at a distance of 10-12 cm, to which the strap is attached in a “loop in a loop” way. The use of side branches or triple swivels is considered inappropriate in clear water.

Note: For a more convenient definition of fish flocks, I recommend that you use a fishfinder that will speed up your fishing process. Read further: How to read fishfinder

Leap for the feeder

A separate topic for conversation. During clear water I mainly use fluorocarbon. A material that I wouldn’t call transparent, but almost invisible in water. I use the Vanish transition from Berkley for the stripes. Due to the invisibility of this line the diameter is not so important. When fishing with braid, I use strips with a diameter of 0.18 mm and a breaking load of 2.9 kg. A line of this diameter is less tangled and twisted by the flow of water. A hook!

The length of the belt is 50-80 cm. The stronger the current, the longer the strap should be. On the belt, I put a pill weighing 0.3-0.5 grams, which can be moved. I will explain it below.

Bait for feeder

Considering the ten March days spent on the river with feeders, I did not see a single bite on worms, spells, etc. – my only bait during this period was bloodworms in their purest form, without any sandwiches.

First, we put a small foam plastic ball of white color on the hook, then two or three bloodworms, putting them with rings (that is, piercing the body under the head and tail). I hide the sting in the tail of the last bloodworm. A foam ball located on the hook raises a hook with a nozzle high in vertical water, which is limited to the ball on the belt and allows you to catch different levels of water. On the flow, the pellet prevents the free oscillation of the belt.

I can’t be specific about why styrofoam is so attractive to fish. I know one thing: a red bloodworm on the white background of the ball becomes a bright target, from which roaches or chubs do not refuse in the spring (these fish often give the main weight in my catch). In addition, playing a certain depth bait on an invisible line, seeing the bait from a fairly long distance, leaves any fish indifferent. The method of nozzle packing is determined by the presence of a large number of fry, which, with the traditional method of planting this delicate bait, pulls the tail of the larva, which causes false bites to be recorded at the top of the feeder. This causes the tackle to be lifted unduly from the bottom and reduces the net catch.

“Feeding the Feeder”

As a basis, I use winter bait with Betaine, which works well in our region. The structure is as follows:

1) Base is 500 grams;

2) milk powder – 1/2 cup;

3) cinnamon – 1 teaspoon;

4) cocoa – 1 teaspoon;

5) Ground dog food with liver smell – 1 glass;

6) as a binder – ground oat flakes;

7) Ripper is sand, if you’re too slick and too watery.

An important note: Regarding consistency of the composition: the bait should be washed from the trough in the first ten minutes. To determine the interval of “release” of the feeder from the feed mix after the first cast, I lift the feeder up after 3-4 minutes, regardless of whether a bite occurs or not. Depending on the condition and amount of bait left in the bird feeder, you can determine whether the structure is loose enough or the opposite, and add rippers or binders to it, respectively. Using the popular “bread + macula” type in cold water does not give any decent results, especially when the consistency is like window putty.

Now that we are ready to fish, we have to reach the same chosen spot and release the tackle accordingly. Now this is not difficult, because there is no need for a long cast. If you do not trust your eyes, use an additional rod equipped with a marker. Once it’s installed on the surface of the water, you’ll always have a reliable landmark… Using these simple techniques and gear will give you the honor of escaping the shadowy competition with fellow fishermen who surround themselves with a palisade of common donkeys. You will only have one feeder! So, having nothing against normal rolling donkeys, I prefer more delicate gear.

Try it, you might like it!

So, based on the above, the set for spring catching on the feeder looks like this:

– a heavy class rod with a test within 125-150 grams;

– Coil EU 3500-4000 from “Line Winder”;

– braid or special line for feeder fishing, with a diameter of 0.17-0.12 mm, for feeder fishing “Albacore” or similar, with a breaking load of 7 kg.

I wish the whole “fraternity” the best of luck for the new fishing season!
