Get in Hot Water by Going Tankless in Your RV

There are a few options to help improve your factory water heater’s heating recovery time. You can also install a hot rod, which is an electric heating element that replaces the anode rod in your water heater. This rod element uses 400 watts of AC power to heat and assist in the recovery of the gas portion of the heater. This is a somewhat viable option to extend the life of your hot water supply, but some water heater manufacturers resent their use, stating that it can void warranties because the lightning rod no longer provides the same corrosion protection as a standard anode rod. You won’t get the hot shower of your dreams with this option though.

This is where the tankless water heater comes into play. There are two types of tankless water heaters: electric and gas-fired. The first type works similar to a hot rod in that an electric heating element heats the water. But that’s where their similarities end. Rather than filling a tank full of water and heating it, an electric tankless heater senses the flowing water, activates the electric heating circuit and heats the water instantly. It is 100% automatic. As soon as you turn off the water flow, the heater turns off. Water temperature is controlled by water pressure. Low water pressure means high heat and high water pressure means low heat.

The gas-fired type works similarly to an electric heater in terms of sensing water flow and instant heating. But in this case, the propane burner heats the water. And it doesn’t require as much electricity as an electric heater. Both can deliver a steady flow of hot water almost indefinitely, but the gas-fired type will be better able to keep up with demand and adapt more easily to the typical RV environment.

The easiest way to replace your RV with a tankless water heater and get a sensational endless shower is to use an inline shower head replacement device. This type of heater uses a powerful electric heating element to instantly heat the incoming water before it exits the shower head. It can raise water temperature up to 50F at a flow rate of one gallon per minute. This should be enough to supplement the factory water heater so that while it’s healing, you’re still getting enough hot water. The only downside is that the unit consumes more than 20+ amps of current. If you decide to go this route you will need to dedicate a circuit breaker and receptacle for this unit.

If you’re boondocking or otherwise camping without a hookup, consider modding it with a custom-installed gas-fired tankless water heater. These units do an excellent job of providing instant and continuous hot water and can be used to supplement or completely replace a standard RV water heater. There are some important things to consider before modding. First is the venting requirement. Like your RVs heater, a tankless heater emits CO2 when the burner is on and the CO2 needs to be diverted outside the RV. Three inches of tubing is the minimum and must exit through the roof or side wall with proper tubing and a vent cap.

Consideration must also be given to where the unit is mounted. The area should be free of anything that could come into contact with the unit. Also, the unit should have some ventilation or fresh air supply. This is not critical but the burner needs oxygen to work. Most standard RV cabinet doors do not seal very well to begin with so when the unit is installed in such an area there must be an adequate air supply to provide proper performance. In any case, follow the manufacturer’s recommended installation procedure if you are unsure. This includes connecting gas and water supplies and any electrical requirements needed to power the unit’s circuit board.

Finally, and of course the most expensive option of all, is to completely replace the factory water heater with a tankless heater made specifically for RVs, the RV500. This is the easiest way ever to drink endless hot water. Replacing a standard water heater with the RV500 is surprisingly easy. Start by turning off the propane and draining your water heater. Remove gas supply line and water line. and disconnect any electrical wiring. Remove the fastening screws on the outer frame of the heater and the unit should slide to the right.

To install the RV500, reverse the steps used to remove the factory water heater. Gas supply pipe and water inlet and outlet tubing require no modification and are likely to be directly connected. The heater requires a 12-volt power supply to operate the circuit board and otherwise control the unit. It’s very low current so you can tap into any nearby 12-volt source. Once installed, all you have to do is turn on the hot water tap and the unit will turn on automatically. Turning off the hot water faucet turns off the heater. It is quiet and will keep up with any demand. Now you can take the time to take your shower but you may need to modify your RV with larger holding tanks!
