Unforgivable Sin and Mental Illness – How Do I Know If I Have Committed the Unforgivable Sin?
As a professional counselor and active Christian, I have often encountered clients who have come to me with a grim face and trembling because they believe they have committed the unforgivable sin. That is, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. I speak to them from my own experience, which I have recorded in a book for those people, that such a crime can only be committed when you are dead. There have been many people in the past who have died cursing Jesus Christ and His sacrifice. This, my dear friends, is the unpardonable sin. You died as you breathed your last, cursing the only name that could ever save your soul. jesus After death, you cannot turn around and ask for forgiveness because your will and your breath are gone.
God is a loving God. He is always ready to hear a contrite heart. Many a cursing man or woman has received forgiveness simply by confessing their sin at the cross and allowing God to forgive them and move on in life. Many wonderful hymns have been written from his knees on that rough spot, saying ‘Once I was blind and now I see’. By hymn writers like John Newton and his wonderful hymn “Amazing Grace.” He (Newton) gave all the glory to God through his writings.
Consider the curse of the philosopher Voltaire who declared that the Bible would no longer be on earth within 100 years of his death, yet his house became a publishing house as he lay on his deathbed cursing the name of Jesus Christ. The Bible! He died in an unforgivable state. Once dead, he had no will or breath of his own to renounce his curse and seek God’s forgiveness. Before you die you must confess your sins with your breath and tongue. Otherwise your will is not yours when you die.
What a sad experience it is to attend the funeral of a non-believer in a cemetery, where the funeral director says in a somber voice, “….such and …………… did not believe. In God and any existence of such Religious recognition was not wanted.”
I am not interested in theological technicalities. All I am interested in is the nature of God. What is his nature? He is loving and nurturing as he says in the song “From a distance the world looks like it’s in line with the lyrics, God is watching us. from a distance” Written by Julie Gould and sung by Bette Midler. Is he really that far away? Or is it tangible to be felt in our hearts? God understands our hearts. He is always ready to turn over a new leaf and start again. Check out the wonderful hymns written by John Newton that we still sing along to today. How sad if God ordained a life of destruction and damnation for Newton, if He never allowed such sinful behavior (his drinking and cursing life) to be washed away. The world would surely have been robbed of the bright words of forgiveness from a broken heart. See below for the words of John Newton’s Amazing Grace.
Yes, it is the gravest offense to curse the name and work of Jesus Christ through the actions of the Holy Spirit alone. Yet God, all merciful, only wants to pick up every cursing tongue and wash it with His love and put it back in place to show His glory. It is the ghost that perpetuates the guilt and belief that once even a thought crosses your mind that you have committed such a crime. Do you really think the ghost can’t get into your thoughts? Well, he excels at it. He specializes in mind control. That is his whole purpose in eternity. To follow a believer or unbeliever to bring him down to the place of damnation. The human mind is Satan’s playground. Why are there so many ‘reincarnations’ of Mary Magdalene in a mental hospital, or why does everyone curse the name of Jesus, but not Allah? Think of the ghost as an immature bully. You wake up at night in a cold sweat thinking that you have committed the unforgivable sin. Who put that thought there first? did you Did you really go to bed that night intending to commit the unforgivable crime? So, where do you think this idea came from? you Rarely likely. The devil hovers around you, waiting for your most vulnerable moment to come. If you have been involved in seances and the like, where do you think the power to lift objects or move glass on a Ouija board comes from? you Please don’t kid yourself!
The same power that met and told you about your grandfather or someone and felt so convincing will come to you and whisper evil thoughts into your head like an unforgivable sin and convince you that it is yours. Thoughts Why do I know this? Because I too was a victim of his sick game. I even almost ended up in a mental hospital due to sleepless nights of pain and screams in my head. I know you can get through this with lots of love, prayer and care. You need the support of fellow Christians and Christian counselors who have walked the walk. You can overcome a diagnosis of mental illness – schizophrenia, manic depression, depression, etc. and stand up by God’s grace and His mighty Holy Spirit. If you are still breathing, say this prayer – “Father, forgive me, I have believed a lie. These were not my thoughts, but thoughts imprinted on me by Satan. I ask you to forgive me where I have left doors open. And now show me, by your Holy Spirit, how to get out of this place of negativity of being yourself. I am created by you and for you. If I am yours, you do not want to destroy your own creation. To see your creation grow and show you Be great and love, don’t wander in the wild depression of high and low. I know you love me. You sent your own Son, Jesus Christ, to die for me, if I were alone. This earthly person, you make a way for me to return to you. I invite Jesus into my heart now and thank you for your love and for forgiving my foolish thoughts. My head, I forgive you for allowing this to grow. ask for That is the sin I am guilty of. I believed a lie. Thank you- Jesus and I now welcome the Holy Spirit into my heart. Welcome Holy Spirit.” Amen.
You are now forgiven and a child of God. You should never forget this. The next time the thought pops into your head, just pray and banish it, “The precious blood of Jesus Christ, shed for my sins at Calvary, protects and preserves me from the evil schemes of the devil by robbing me of my rightful enjoyment. In life with Jesus Christ. I am freed by the shedding of the blood of Jesus.” Became and my life is now shared in the glory of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They are one. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Amen.
Amazing Grace – John Newton
Amazing grace! (what a sweet sound)
It saved a lowly man like me!
I was once lost, but now found,
Was blind, but now sees.
‘Twas grace taught my heart to fear,
And by grace my fear was overcome;
How precious that grace appeared,
The hour in which I first believed!
Many dangers, hardships and snares,
I have already come;
‘Thus far her grace has brought me safe,
And grace will take me home.
The Lord has promised to do good to me,
His word secures my hope;
He shall be my shield and portion,
As long as life lasts.
Yea, when this body and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
Within the veil I will possess,
A life of happiness and peace.
Earth will soon melt like ice,
The sun endures to shine;
But God, who called me down here,
Will always be mine.
