Knee Deep In The Holy Spirit

Today we will study Ezekiel’s vision as described in verse 47:1-4). In this vision he had a guide to guide him through it. This vision predicts the beginning of the Church after the resurrection of Christ and explains the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of Christians that will determine our spiritual growth and our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Every day I see new Christians anxious—even impatient to grow and receive all of God’s blessings. – If that’s you, or if you’ve lost what you had, listen to what I have to say next.

The Holy Spirit indwells every believer the moment they are born again. The process of growth is greatly accelerated when the believer consciously submits himself to the filling and control of Christ and the Holy Spirit. A believer who is empowered by the Holy Spirit and a faithful student of God’s Word, who has learned to trust and obey God, can go through various stages of spiritual growth and become a mature Christian in a short period of time. — Some Spirit-filled Christians show more fruit of the Spirit within a year than uneducated or unbelieving believers for 50 years.

Ezekiel 47:1. – “Then he brought me again to the door of the house (temple – church); and behold, water came out from under the threshold of the house toward the east: the front of the house stood toward the east, and the water came down from below on the right side of the house, south of the altar.” — The water spoken of here is living water – or the Holy Spirit.

As we learn and surrender to God’s Word, we are filled more with the Holy Spirit. This water came from God through the church and into the world. It is from him that living water flows.

Ezekiel 47:3 – “And he that had the line in his hand went eastward, and counted a thousand cubits, and he brought me out of the water; the water was up to the ankle.” — Under the eastern gate the water came out apparently as a small stream that ran a thousand cubits, a little less than a third of a mile. Ezekiel later records: “The man…brought me out of the water,” and says it was ankle deep. (This symbolizes the area where new converts or baby Christians walk)

Ezekiel 47:4 He again counted a thousand and brought me out of the water. The water was up to the knees. He counted a thousand again and brought me out. The water was up to the waist. (This symbolizes spiritual growth and maturity as we go deeper with the Holy Spirit).

The further this water flowed, the deeper it became. Among other things, it symbolizes our continued walk with the Lord, as we experience more of the Holy Spirit as we walk through the living waters, realizing that His supply of grace and love is abundant and unlimited.

Ankle deep Christian — This is the area where we build our foundation. It is for this reason that my church conducts a special 13-week class that teaches new converts the basics of the Christian life. (Creating a Firm Foundation).

At the moment of salvation we receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. However, it is up to each individual to decide how much of the Holy Spirit they want to fill their lives with.

Ezekiel 47:3 symbolizes a new Christian stepping into living water that is ankle deep. But if you expect to grow to maturity, you will have to wade through these ankle-deep waters steadily and downward. In verse 4 you will notice that the water gets deeper as you go downstream.

However, we see many Christians, new and old, walking across rather than downstream. They come on Sunday mornings, step into the water from the shore of the world, and then return to the shore of the world as they leave the church. We would like to start our firm foundation classes, but they are not regularly attended. Some people never come to Sunday school class – and only come to Sunday morning service – never pray or read their Bibles – and then wonder why their lives are messed up, or why they don’t get all God’s blessings. These guys aren’t ankle deep – they’re just putting their toes in the water. In order to grow, they need to move downstream – finding their way below the surface.

We allow our petty troubles to grow into bigger problems because of our “self-centeredness” and lack of faith in God’s Word.

We allow “simple differences” to escalate into major conflicts that lead to broken friendships or even broken homes. – But if we had walked in the Spirit and had a right relationship with God – it would have been just a “simple disagreement”.

Our faith grows by walking in the Spirit and receiving the Word. But how many of us open the Bible for a few minutes a day to glorify Him?

We can have as much of the Holy Spirit as we want. All we have to do is step into the water and go with the flow.

Flow is available to all of us. It is your decision or choice to step into it and then have the wisdom and willingness to go with the flow. Sometimes this requires sacrifice.

Spiritual maturity is always determined by our willingness to sacrifice our own desires for the sake of God’s kingdom or for the sake of others.

Knee-deep Christian — Ezekiel 47:4 – “He counted a thousand again, and brought me through the water; the water was up to the knees. He counted a thousand again, and brought me through it; the water was up to the waist.” (This is a symbol of spiritual growth and maturity Because we go deeper with the Holy Spirit).

This is what the Holy Spirit does in the lives of those who surrender to Him. We begin to experience His supply of grace, which flows from Christ—the fountainhead, and its preciousness increases as we daily walk in the stream in the light of His Word.

Ezekiel 47:7 “Now when I returned, behold, there were many trees on the banks of the river on one side and on the other.”

When Ezekiel came out of the deep water, he was amazed to see strong healthy trees laden with rich fruit on both sides of the river. (This symbolizes the multitude of mature Christians in the church who were teaching the word and bearing new fruit.) The church will be here for some time before Christ comes.

Galatians 5:22,23 “But when the Holy Spirit is in control of our lives, He will produce such fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”.

When we develop these fruits in mature Christians — broken marriages are mended, — forgiveness becomes easier, — telling others about Jesus is a joy (an obsession), — we gain the courage to stand still and let God move. is Our lives, — the love of God is shown through us by our good works, — our self-control is strengthened so that we have strength to resist temptation, — we desire to serve for the glory of God, — and we have joy, peace, and contentment. The power to experience whatever your circumstances. (How much better can life get?)

But to receive those things, we have to step into the river of “living water” that Ezekiel saw in his vision and keep walking until all those fruits flourish in our lives. When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, we desire the knowledge available through God’s Word. When we sing to Him in our church services, we lift our hands and voices in praise. We want to be like Jesus.

If you are a Christian and your life is out of control, stressed, struggling with temptation. Or you are under an addiction that you cannot break. If you don’t feel joy and peace, maybe you’re out of the water and need to get back in. Or maybe it’s only ankle deep, (some of you have been there all your life), and the fruit can’t bloom. Then pray for strength to move forward. We have to keep going until we have enough Holy Spirit and Word to grow those fruits. We can have as much of the Holy Spirit as we want. We just have to go with the flow.

Ezekiel 47:7 symbolizes a group of mature Christians who were teaching the Word and bearing new fruit. Thousands of people are beginning to bring others to Christ through “Bridge Ministries”.
