Understanding the Different Types of Yoga

Yoga is becoming more and more popular in the western world today. The number of people taking yoga classes is increasing and different forms of yoga are flourishing. With Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and more to choose from, it can be easy to get confused.

The article will help you understand the differences between the most popular forms of yoga so that you can choose which form is right for you.

Hatha Yoga – In Sanskrit (an ancient classical language of India) “Ha” means “Sun” and “Tha” means “Moon”. This form of yoga is a relatively slow-paced, gentle type of yoga and is a good place to start if you are completely new to yoga and don’t know any of the asanas (poses). Like all forms of yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to connect the mind, body and spirit.

Ashtanga Yoga – This is the type of yoga I do regularly and means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit. It is a fast, intense style of yoga practice and is based on a progressive set sequence of asanas synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga yoga can be physically demanding as you constantly move from asana to asana, so you’ll find that it will improve your endurance as well as your flexibility and strength.

Power Yoga – This is the western interpretation of yoga and is based on Ashtanga Yoga. A power yoga class does not necessarily stick to an exact sequence of poses like Ashtanga yoga, but involves practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting.

Iyengar Yoga – This form of yoga is based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar and focuses on proper alignment and form of the body. Unlike Ashtanga yoga, the emphasis is on holding each posture for a long time, rather than constantly moving from one asana to another. Iyengar yoga uses props like blocks and straps to help align the body in different poses.

Vinyasa Yoga – Vinyasa is another fast-paced form of yoga with an emphasis on synchronized movement and breathing. The practice typically begins with Surya Namaskar and progresses to more intense stretching. Each pose is balanced with a counter pose throughout the practice.

Bikram Yoga – otherwise known as “hot yoga”, is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees with about 40% humidity. A Bikram yoga class usually involves practicing 26 different poses, and the hot temperature helps loosen the muscles. The high temperature causes most people to sweat a lot during class and this helps to flush out toxins from the body.

If you are just starting out or have never done yoga before, I recommend trying a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best.

Remember, there is no rule that you have to stick to one type of yoga. I like Ashtanga yoga the most, but I also occasionally attend Iyengar and Hatha yoga classes.
