How Level 3 and 3A Body Armor Differ From Each Other

If you look at the standards set by the National Institute of Justice, you will notice an ‘A’ at every level. For example, Level 3 and 3A are body armor. This raises a lot of questions from users, especially those who are new to this type of protective clothing.

In this article, you will discover the differences and advantages of these two types of bullet proof vests. At the end of this article, you will also discover that the level of ballistic vest is related to your daily activities.

In the 1970s, the US Department of Justice conducted research and studies to develop appropriate standards. After many tests, trials and evaluations, the final resistance standard was developed which is known today as National Institute Standard 0101.

This standard was introduced in 1987 and remains the primary standard used worldwide for bullet resistance vests to this day. With strict quality control, wearers are assured that the bullet proof vest can provide protection as stated on the label.

The standard of resistance is divided into six levels. It is level 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 3, 3A and 4. Levels 1 to 3A are considered part of soft body armor while levels 3 and 4 are part of hard armor. Hard body armor is designed to repel very powerful ammunition. This type of ballistic vest consists of hard armor plates that are inserted into the pockets of the soft body armor. This is basically the primary difference between Level 3 and Level 3A body armor. Level 3A is soft bullet resistant vest while level 3 is hard armor.

Hard plates require a combination of soft ballistic vests to be considered hard body armor. This means that after the resistance vest for additional calibers and testing for rifles specified in the NIJ standard, inclusion of +A in the threat level is approved. A soft bullet resistant vest becomes level 3 after adding a hard armor plate or plates. Consequently, the higher the level of protection, the heavier and heavier the vest becomes.

Typically, a level 3A bullet proof vest can withstand 22 long rifle lead rounds, .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 full metal jacket, .357 magnum and other handguns. A Level 3 ballistic vest, on the other hand, can withstand 7.62 full metal jacketed bullets and other 48 joule energy weapons. This is considered the highest level of defense in standard resistance capabilities except for level 4 which is often custom made to defeat more advanced ammunition.
